Purpose of the tilde key?

Is there really a purpose in the ~/` key?
It’s not like you can actually put it over a letter (at least on my computer), and the accent thing just makes weird looking apostrophes.

For some pc games it’s possible to insert cheat codes after pressing tilde. But you also have to mess around with the game’s files, but once you’re done just press tilde and “inf ammo” or something.

class X
{
    ~X()
    {
        cout<<"Object of class X being destroyed";
    }
};

[noparse]Oh,

I didn’t realize Code didn’t require 10 char afterward :O

^^ I’ll have to try that in every game >:]

“I didn’t realize Code didn’t require 10 char afterward :O” → Doesn’t quite make sense anymore.

It’s so you can be Asian like thisssss~~~

Oh yeah~

It’s equal to:
Oh yeahhhhhh

~!cool people use it!~

Or to show that you’re drooling -

AMG IT’S [insert name of Korean pop group here]!!! 8Q~~~~~

^ like Eastlife?

~I feel so clever~

It doesn’t really make sense that it’s on keyboards for English, especially since there isn’t even a way to get them on top of the desired letter. I never really thought about it, but now I realize it’s quite odd.

Computer programming, I’d gander.
Otherwise, it’s to give “hugs” and the like.
E.g.
I LUHHHH U lolz~
