i think all the schools in my county have only 6 periods in a school day, but I see a lot of the schools on here have 7-8 in a day. However, the schools in my area are fairly competitive (ranked #200-300 I think in U.S. News), so what does this mean?
Are you in California? I have this theory that schools in California may tend to offer fewer periods because of the way the UC system calculates the UC GPA. It is capped at weighting 8 semesters of classes out of all the academic classes you take during 10th and 11th grade. So, taking more academic classes those years just lowers your UC GPA (if, hypothetically, you got all As). They do look at course rigor and other factors, but different UCs put different importance on the UC GPA vs. other GPA calculations.
I go to a California school, top 100, with 6 classes in a day. Class selection is pretty limited, though, and our school actually isn’t very good… Just hard.
Nah, Georgia
I have 4 classes a day, block rotation system.
I would not read anything into it.
9 periods a day. My school isn’t even ranked (IL)
Most people in my school have 6 classes a day… I have 9 (2 online and a zero hour)
Since we’re including rankings, my schools like top 1000 in US news or something?
Honestly, it means nothing.
Some schools have block scheduling, with large blocks of time 2 or 3 times per week per subject. Other schools choose to break the time down to smaller chunks, more often.
There are good schools and fabulous and less than good schools who do it each way…
I’m in California and we also have 6 periods.
I went to an average public school in Ohio, and we had a block-scheduling system with four periods per day. You took eight classes every year, but each class only lasted one semester.
(My high school is in the top 200.) Everyone has 6 periods a day, unless you sign up for a 7th period. This option started a few years ago. A lot of people hate it because all of their friends get to leave school and they still have one more class. I think a few other schools in my area do the same thing.
In the top 15; 7 periods a day; Georgia
my high school is ranked #1227 and we have 6 periods total, 3 periods a day.
