Questbridge College Prep Scholar 2016 Applicant Thread

Asking again, do you guys know if everyone who got a travel grant, it was: $400? Do you also know how rare it is to get the grant (like chances and %)?

@WouldYouAcceptMe No not everyone got $400 My travel grant was $250.

If anybody wants to share their own stats to help future students looking into this program or to rationalize results this template could be used. Credits to the 2015 thread.

When I got accepted, I was shocked. I didn’t have amazing stats. I almost didn’t apply. Good luck to everyone next year!

Objective:

Weaknesses: No work experience, no awards, and no test scores besides my PSAT and AP world history scores

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I think I was accepted because of my essay. It was on a really emotional topic. Even though the writing wasn’t the best, I think Questbridge looked past that.

What other Scholarships will you be applying for: I haven’t really looked

**General Comments: **
For those of you applying next year, don’t be discouraged from applying because you think you don’t have good enough stats. I certainly didn’t have the best stats and I got accepted! Try to focus on your essay because it will really allow Questbridge to get to know you.

Does becoming a QB scholar mean your chances of becoming a finalist are good? Also, who’s going to the Northwestern conference??

@ax5261 there’s a fb group for both NU and Yale conferences if you are interested to see who is going

Essays: I didn’t think it was that good, to be honest. At best a 6/10. The short answers I think were better.

Hooks (First Generation College, Minority,Learning Disability, etc.): First generation to attend a 4 year university.

Reflection:
Strengths: Focused on one aspect, education and wanting to serve. I strayed away from being a “jack of all trades,” but rather took the approach of excelling in one thing. Maybe also the fact that I took two languages, although that probably didn’t do much.

Weaknesses: Definitely my essays, test scores, and GPA.

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: No idea, although I think that I won’t get the summer programs to be completely honest.

What other Scholarships will you be applying for: N/A

**General Comments: **
I don’t think it’s about stats as much as it is what have you been doing outside of the classroom to achieve a lot, as well as what makes you unique. I would stay away from being that “jack-of-all-trades” kind of person and hone in on a few activities that you really enjoy and are passionate about, rather than doing a bunch of different activities and not standing out from the crowd.

@califunfun
You are an awesome candidate for any college/university.
Is it possible your families income was too high? Questbridge a focus is on underprivileged low income students.

@califunfun

While your stats looked good, I know that Questbridge tends to put a lot of focus on the essays and short answers. Do you mind posting/pming your written responses so we can take a look? It’s possible you are overestimating how well your responses are written.

@califunfun I agree with wispanic. And you income might have been a huge reason as well.

@wispanic I messaged you back btw! I don’t think you got the notif/email hahah

On the national college match, do colleges see what place you ranked them?

They released the profile for us! https://www.questbridge.org/high-school-students/college-prep-scholars/profile

@athenanv13 oooh that’s pretty cool. I feel so proud to be that little teensy part of the profile  congrats to all of us ahh i’m so happy! <3

Bio essay: was pretty good, wrote about how my family, music, and childhood experiences pushed me towards wanting to pursue a career in medicine, not my best essay prob 7/10

Short essays: were pretty solid, wrote about interesting topics… my home country and my experiences there with very poor people, apathy as a detriment to society, and overcoming some of my biggest fears. I would say 8-9/10 overall

Teacher Recommendation:
AP Psych Teacher, wrote my rec for other programs I was accepted to, she loves me and knows me pretty well… didn’t read it but it should be really good, probably 8-9/10

[ b]Reflection:**
Strengths: good stats and grades, school ranked top 10 in the nation, sufficient ec’s, I think my essays were also solid although could have used more work, and letter of rec was definitely stellar…

Weaknesses:
income and ethnicity?? I guess my income was pretty close to the cut off and probably higher than others applying
Essays could have been worked on more
More leadership roles

Why you think you were accepted/rejected:
probably my income, ec’s could be stronger too

Coolidge Scholars
NCM in the fall…

[ b]General Comments: **
I guess i was bummed about not getting this one, however it’s not keeping me from applying to the NCM in the fall… to anyone else who was denied, don’t get discouraged!!! The hustle never ends!!! I do also agree that applying to this was good preparation for the more extensive applications in the future(college apps, NCM, scholarships, fafsa, etc)

x

@jess1911 That’s the spirit! Definitely try out for NCM and see how it goes. Congrats about the other programs you got accepted to!
