Questbridge Scholarship - 2008

You both need to look on the Questbridge site because you are both wrong. You can apply ED AFTER matches come out not before as you have stated two times now that you did (the schools that allow you ED give you an email to notify AFTER MATCH on 12/1 or I guess if you want you could call). No it does not clearly state that you can apply ED to some partner schools during MATCH (only regular admission)- again the reason why Questbridge tells finalist to put RD on the common application during the match process. The fact that you bypassed Questbridge and called Amherst does not make it right and you were gaming the process. And sybbie719 I had all my information in (ready for EA and ED) but did not formally ED before the match process notification therefore I didn’t HAVE to withdraw anything. Oh and if Amherst allowed you to ED during match - wow…that kind of defeats the whole purpose and is unfair to other applicants.

No, you are wrong, and are not interpreting the text correctly.

It says by 12/1 not after 12/1.

Submitting the app for ED so that it is available for them to meet their timetable is not gaming anything. The app was not going to be looked at until after 11/30. Their ED deadline was 11/15.

I’m sorry that you are so bitter about QB.

You are dead wrong, just like when you called my post “dribble.”

Dribble is drool. When you are criticizing words as nonsense, the correct word to use is “drivel.”

I’m done here. I’ve been accepted to a beautiful school, and I am looking forward to a bright future, in which I will dedicate myself to helping people. That is not drivel, btw, that is the truth.

Who said I said after 12/1 - matches came out 11/30 - I whipped emails out 11/30 evening and on 12/1 and I’m assuming as long as its dated it should be accepted (not Amherst BTW). I love it how people start assuming stuff just because they are called out. I applied to two match schools just because one was non binding and other because it was in NY. Originally I was going to just do RD and apply ED at Penn. But I figured I had the won the College Prep QB so why not. Did I expect to be matched - absolutely not. So sorry not bitter but it does irk me when people make their own rules like applying ED to a school when QB says not to. Yes Amherst does say by 12/1 and yes it would be hard to get all your materials in ED - I’m guessing some schools make the deadline this tight so they don’t get a bunch of non matched finalist ED’ing just for the sake of ED. Getting in all your application materials ahead of time (like I did with all my other schools) = smart thing to do and I don’t have an issue with that. BTW I did mean dribble - as your posted words dripped off my screen, soaking my keyboard and shorting out the AT&T network last night. Yea well dribble or drivel you get the idea lol!

I love broccoli! =D

IF you go to the site, it specifically states:

Can I apply Early Decision? Yes.
Email Demisha Lee at dwlee@amherst.edu by December 1. Yes.
Adhere to normal Early Decision deadlines.

[QuestBridge National College Match - Regular Decision Table](http://www.questbridge.org/students/post_match.html)

FDM, contacted Demisha Lee, who told her send in the application? the problem is…

I do not understand what is so hard… Amherst acceptes the QB application with supplement, which FDM would have had to do anyway if she had it as her first choice. Part of me feels if you are going to be mad at anyone, be mad at Amherst, because student simply submitted her application as instructed and they chose her (which was well within their right to do so).

to hotchoco: the poster wrote “So … where are the other 8 scholars?”
I counted all the previous unique posters before and got 8. So I assumed that there were 16 total. But since I didn’t get matched to Stanford, I can’t say I’m absolutely sure.

Okay, here’s how it goes:
to grtskt: you are simply bitter because you didn’t know about it that option.
to Fleur: you are smart to read between the lines and go with the option. I didn’t know this was possible. I commend you.

Since she took the time to ask Amherst about the legality of such an issue, it is completely legit. She was creative and her creativity paid off. This is why she deserves to go into her #1 school.

Seriously grtskt, this is LIFE. It isn’t about the question of fairness, but being creative and solving problems. Now you’ve learned your lesson. Life isn’t straight-forward and direct; it takes its twists and turns. Seriously, if you haven’t known that before applying to QuestBridge, then you are too sheltered to qualify for QuestBridge anyways. This is the KEY to SUCCESS. You see a problem, you think of solutions, and you ASK AROUND to see if those solutions are viable. There is nothing wrong in this. Just because the majority of us assumed it was an EA or QB choice doesn’t mean it is. Stop being a poor sport and move ON with this. You were rejected from a Match, big deal. So were 94% of others (basing on previous stats). Now go spend your energy on writing a better personal statement rather than arguing about meaningless nonsense.

You are not going to change anything by calling other cheaters. Seriously, you act like a 7th grader who lost a basketball game.

I’ve had it with this thread. It started out hopeful and supportive and I thought it had potential. But now it’s become this baseless thread where rejects ■■■■■ around. Instead of pointing fingers at racist colleges and unfair rules, why not help each other out with the next round of applications? Your journey isn’t done yet; keep on going.

GO DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE. Maybe I’ll even see you in my college next year.

But they didn’t chose her. sybbie719 Oh good grief you don’t even know what you are talking about. The regular decision table is AFTER MATCH AFTER MATCH. And this isn’t anger it’s frustration lol! The issue isn’t getting all the materials there it’s doing ED before the match process is complete. I don’t care about Amherst, if they want to make up rules as they go along whatever they paid the 50K for the diversity list. But jeez don’t you think other applicants that maybe didn’t have this information because maybe couldn’t call long distance (remember disadvantaged) or w/e are being shortchanged here. I mean the purpose of QB is to provide accurate info to students. Questbridge didn’t mean for FDM to apply ED before the match process was complete. Even when you are notified as a finalist you are given like a week to get everything in - there are tight deadlines throughout the entire process. That’s why you get everything in once your notified you’re a finalist BUT YOU DONT ED, EA, SCEA any school until the match process is complete. Then you move on to the Regular Decision round. OK I’m not going to keep repeating myself…Halcykon it isn’t being Creative and IT WASNT an option - OMG now I’ve heard it all…yes the reason why I didn’t get matched was because of my personal statement…give a nerd some confidence and out come the pompous statements.

blddrake44 I love kitties! And believe it or not I think if you look at my history here and the peeps on FB know I’m not a bitter or ignorant person. I think the Questbridge program is great otherwise I wouldn’t have been participating since Junior yr. Does anyone else think its weird that FDM never posted throughout this whole process and just posts on this thread after people start bringing up the URM issue. BTW where did that person go? Another new poster trying stir things up. Anyway I didn’t even apply Match or RD to Amherst - to much like UChicago and ewh no way.

Thanks Sybbie,
What you state about Amherst and the Match is absolutely correct.

The fact of my ED App is moot anyway, since I was matched, and it was never considered.

Some people cannot look past stats, and are so competitve and stressed out that it makes them react negatively.

My response was only to clarify the facts, which I have, regardless of the fact that she is unable to grasp the concepts.

The fact is that this is not the only instance where the QB site had posted info that the partner colleges were not in total agreement with. I’m sure that other finalists applied ED and were similarly instructed to send in their supplements before the Match notification.

It’s okay though. I’m confident that I acted ethically, and followed the rules. I don’t do things to hurt people. I’m the biggest goody-two-shoes on the planet. Anyone who knows me, knows this to be true about me.

This is my last post on the subject.

Again, best to all with RD.

xiggi:

I’m well aware that one cannot draw any conclusion from the data. But my knowledge comes from multiple sources, with my involvement with QuestBridge. Some from current staff members, some from what I’ve seen, some from the stats, some from many of those actually matched, both last year and this year. The stats I provided were only a small portrayal of my point.

I don’t believe I was talking about any INDIVIDUAL school. I believe I was talking about those who get matched through QuestBridge.

I don’t believe I was contesting this.

… or that.

The ranking data was just an added snippet. It may or may not have been due to the point I was trying to make. Notice, though, that I provided it within the context of the rest of the data.

Did I ever say that Asians are at a disadvantage? I don’t believe so. I simply said that URMs are at a real advantage. This, of course, means that those who are not URMs are at a disadvantage, comparatively (in the same way that giving people with brown hair an advantage technically puts people with blonde hair at a disadvantage). But this is delving into the heart of the AA matter and really depends on whether you think that some applicants are at a disadvantage if others are at an advantage – or vice versa.

This is really irrelevant. We’re looking at the fixed pool of QB finalists. Asians, who make up only 4-5% of the population, are matched at a 13% rate and are accepted at a 32% rate. In other words, the focus is on the difference between the two rounds, not each round and the percent in the US.

In the past, it would go: college A ranks student X first, then you look at student X’s ranking. Student X may have placed college 3, behind college B and college C. You’d have to look at where college B and C placed student X, if anywhere, and what students college B and C placed ahead of student X, what colleges they ranked, and so on. (This, I assume, is not done by hand.) This is assuming that the college will place a limit on how many they will give full scholarships out of the total they rank. This would make it seem much more like a “crapshoot” than Harvard – though I wouldn’t consider “crapshoot” to be a pejorative. This process may or may not still be the same – the colleges now might simply choose the students and that’s that (which might be a change, as implied by “college on their list that has also selected them,” which used to have “ranked” instead of “selected”), though this is how Tom Brady explained it to me when I asked about it, as I wasn’t sure whether the colleges set a limit or not.

I’m sure you have an extremely high opinion of QB—I do, too, as it is a very noble organization—but how my explanation undermines the ‘care and integrity of its participants,’ I don’t know.

At any rate, it’s clear that URMs are at a great advantage in the process – I don’t think even QB staff members would disagree with that, since 70% of those matched are URMs.

I understand your frustration. In fact, it’s natural, given the long and grueling process of Questbridge. But please do try to be rational through it all.

Here are the facts.
-ED for Amherst was 11/15.
-On that chart it says you can email Lee by 12/1 to ask any questions (btw email is free, so there’s no disadvantaged excuse here)
-She asked, and Amherst says it’s okay.

NOW, QuestBridge may have stated the NO ED rule but really this is to be courteous to the colleges. In the end, it affects the COLLEGES ED, not QB.
But if Amherst says they’re okay with it, then it’s okay.

Plus, it’s illogical for Amherst to say that Finalists can apply ED 11/15 “after the match”. It doesn’t make much sense! So say she was confused. She asked, and received an answer.

And even the really disadvantaged students who are committed would find a way to make a long distance call (providing that there isn’t email, for some reason). Because this is their future they’re talking about! I would go all out to get that long distance call. A simple example would be to buy a calling card.

edit:
Oh god. Two ■■■■■■■■ subjects at once? Not good.
KyleDavid, you are correct that URMs have a better chance. From an article posted earlier it seems that the purpose of QuestBridge was to promote diversity in colleges- through economic status yes, but it correlates to race as well.
BUT it doesn’t mean that QuestBridge is all about the color of your skin. Notice that Caucasian has 15% share of that pie-tying in with Mexicans, being fourth largest overall. Caucasians are definitely not URM.
As I’ve stated before, QuestBridge looks beyond academics. Poorer families (who are generally non-white, but of course not all) do average lower scores, but more than make up for it in integrity and character.
Is that unfair, for QuestBridge to provide them with access to a better future?

Halcykon no the QB process wasn’t as grueling as TASP (doesn’t even come close) besides most of my QB app and all other colleges were complete early Sept. ED for most colleges was way before matches would be announced and QB knew this. That is why they extended those ED dates for finalist who aren’t matched hence the next round called regular decision.

Looks like my lame attempt to change the topic to a lighter one failed. =/

Well the process of QB may have been different for people.
I applied to 6 schools, including PYS, so that 5-day timeline was really tough for me. Especially since my fax decided when it wanted to work.

I’ll conclude on this. I don’t follow your argument, and you don’t seem to follow the rest of ours. I’ll agree to disagree.
But just please agree with me on this: It’s over. QB is done. FDM did not get in trouble. That should shed some credibility towards her, if QB and Amherst aren’t on her case.

Now I believe you still have RD to fill out
And now I bid you adieu. Good luck on your applications!

lol at blddrake.

No I’m not the clear victor because I’ve been here longer but hopefully more credible. See how I interrupted it was if you don’t get matched then you can still apply ED during the RD round (as long as you get everything in by 12/1). N Dame also has earlier EA dates but lets you apply EA if you send an email by 12/1. Both are separate - you don’t apply EA, SCEA or ED during match. But if what FDM says is true (cough) about Amherst saying “sure it’s ok to do ED at the same time” and she signed an ED agreement then all I’m saying is that is sketchy on Am’s part.

wow…this thread is having a LONG POST ERA now. (Just kidding. ah…it’s not that funny…)

anyway, I was just trying to release some tension. Personally, I think QB is definitely an outstanding program. EVen though I wasn’t matched w/ any school, just the fee waivers saved me hundreds of dollars.

But Since the match process has already ended. the thing is DONE, why don’t we move on with RD?

Thanks Halcykon for answering my question cuz it seems that stanford has been the most “mysterious” QB partner school. since i submitted my app to them, i haven’t heard ANYTHING from them. BTW, have you been matched to somewhere?

and last, a quick question for the RD process, anyone heard anything back from your RD colleges? like how to proceed? and do we need to send official scores/transcripts to them if we’re using the QB app??

Thanks in advance

Yes its over - but I think its funny u assume that QB knows that FDM did ED during match. And just because she didn’t get in trouble maybe it’s because they didn’t know. I mean she never went through QB. But you know youre right Amherst pays QB and I doubt QB is going care. So kiddies applying to Qb next year, it seems like you can call the partner schools now during match and tell them you want to do ED too - oh because FDM said so lol!

Hotchoco just contact the schools - don’t go by the QB site alone. That is what I have learned. I contacted N Dame through RD to apply EA and no rsvp from that email they gave and QB doesn’t rsvp either. Also the email to a few of the schools are wrong - so go to the actual schools sites and look up the names. Also Emory states you can request a waiver in the email but in reality they want you to get one from your school.

IDK I got tons of fee waivers so QB didn’t save me money at all. In fact having to spend money to do CSS and express mailing stuff cost me tons of money - haha that’s what I’m bitter about - spending money.

No problem hotchoco
I got into Yale.

So yes, please. Let’s continue this QB thread into a more productive RD thread.

Okay so what are we arguing about now?

I think this has been extremely productive especially to next years applicants. FDM has just informed us that the QB rules about ED aren’t set in stone.
