Oh, I see now – he did say that. (See, quoting can be helpful. =p)

tokenadult: I used to live in the Midwest, too, though I’d rather the weather be a) extremely cold to the point that it snows, or b) hot. Instead, I get weather that’s cold like no other, but not cold enough to gear up like an astronaut, so I never feel sufficiently covered up. Bah, humbug on southern California. Viva la northern CA! haha

haha Kyle. Well, I’ve been a CA resident through and through.
tokenadult, where did your wife live before? I visited a few parts of Taiwan before. I love window-shopping in Taiwan. It’s an experience like no other.

And Venus: yes you can apply RD for schools you didn’t rank. That I’m pretty certain.

google2008, I’m doing Swarthmore for RD, but haven’t heard anything yet. If I don’t get an e-mail reply by tomorrow, i’m going to call them. then i’ll tell you what they say.
and I ranked princeton, yale, willimas, and columbia also. only heard from Yale not the other three. …is it a bad sign??oh, I also heard from Notre Dame.

Venus, you definitely can apply RD to those schools. but since they don’t use QB application, it’s really no point of forwarding QB app to them, except for the fee waiver

If you didn’t rank them - I don’t think so for ED and EA. At least this is what I know… Just got an email from N Dame and they said because I didn’t rank them during the match round they can’t do the EA option (even though I emailed by the deadline according to the QB site) but I can do regular admission. (Very nice email BTW) This is why I was saying that if you got in all your materials for the match round (like extra sups, teacher recs) that all you had to do was just email or call to be considered for ED, EA. That there was no need to sign an ED agreement like FDM did and what QB said you can’t do (of course she is saying that directive came from Amherst not QB). I didn’t get the impression from QB that you were suppose to go around calling the schools during match - maybe QB should make that clear next year. That some schools don’t follow the flow charts and to first check. But do I think QB is this lax? - no. I know QB sent out an email before finalists were announced to tell us to make sure to have everything in just in case we were finalist. They didn’t tell us afterwards to make sure you call each school and sign ED agreements before the matches are announced.

Now that I’ve slept on it I do realize that maybe I was harsh on FDM but actually it was a reaction to her post and some other people’s posts that come off as if “I know why I was matched and you weren’t” - the fact is that they don’t know and it might be because of scores, race, compelling story or all of these factors…they don’t know and we don’t know why we weren’t. All I know is that I consider us equal and I wish some posters would practice a little humility on this and the Questbridge boards. Already some are saying - email me to see how its done and like Halcykon said to me “go improve your personal statement” or FDM saying the schools only picked those who had altruistic values… I mean give me a break - how is this being helpful?

google2008, i haven’t heard from any of the colleges, except Yale, even though i’ve ranked them for regular admissions. Did they just send you an email when you haven’t sent them anything (such as an inquiring email)? I hope this is not a bad sign for me hahaha…

This thread has been enlightening to me because I thought I had heard in previous years that a QuestBridge match acceptance was tantamount to an ED acceptance. When I drilled down in the QuestBridge site, I found out that some QuestBridge partner colleges consider a QuestBridge match acceptance to be just like EA–nonbinding. That was good to learn. Now I can think of some local students to whom I will recommend QuestBridge in the next few years. (I don’t generally recommend ED-like programs to low-income students.)

My wife grew up in northern Taiwan, near Taipei, where it is chilly sometimes in winter but there is no frost, ever. My two younger children were just there to visit their uncles and grandparents. They thought the weather was shirtsleeve weather.

Yes it is just like an ED acceptance (in most cases) you have to go to the school that matches you (except for Stanford, Yale, Princeton -any others???). But when you submit your application you get to chose the schools and rank them or you have the option of just using QB to forward your applications (if youre a finalist in most cases the fee is waived). Still people were saying after the fact “can we not go to the school even if we are matched” GAH! By hey we’re teenagers and fickle like that sometimes lol!

So if you list a school (up to 8) and you end up at your last choice you HAVE to go. unless its (P,S,Y). Even University of Chicago and Notre Dame which are EA for everyone else are basically ED for Questbridge applicant finalist (if they are in your top 8)…didn’t like that about the program. But they sell it as a full ride - but you basically can get that at most of these schools anyway w/o Questbridge. My sister does at her top 20 school and our EFC is O. She has about 2K in work study (which I noticed Questbridge student have to do) and about 7K in student loans (most are federal which I noticed QB matches sometimes have) when she graduates. But she doesn’t get the perks like a computer, health insurance, and travel and book fees paid for like some schools pay w/QB match (although not many do) So basically being matched for me just would have alleviated stress. But surprisingly I’m not so stressed probably because I submitted everything ahead of time knowing that my chances not being 1st generation, 45K a year and home owner, not URM meant that the odds were against me. But my wallowing lasted 8 hours and now I’m actually happy I will have more choices. It’s also fun going through something like this with a bunch of people that care about college - like no one talks or very few at my school about all this.

The problem I see besides the fact that it takes them so long to answer emails lol!! is that since each school participating is paying Questbridge for this service (Wall Street Journal article - which I never saw disclosed on the website) Questbridge really has no control some things - they are the middle man and like a free college advisor (sort of in some cases). Therefore if a school wants to change criteria then Questbridge basically sends you an email that says each individual school has its own policies.

I happen to have had a counselor that gave me as many fee waivers as I needed and I knew tons about the college process since I have a sister that just went through all this 3 years ago and got all her info from this board. Also because of TASP and GHP I had many essays prepared early Junior year. Getting the QB College Prep let me know I was on the right track with my college preparation.

hotchoco, I called Swarthmore today and they said that you have to email to activate your account. questbridge@swarthmore.edu

Harvardprincess, they sent me a email bascially telling me that my application will be read again for RD and I have to I think send in 2007 tax returns for financial aid.

I didn’t hear from Notre Dame and Notre Dame was non-binding for QB btw

I think we should start a new thread for Regular Decision and compile the requirements for the different schools and stuff Just so everyone can be organized and know what to do haha

I’ve heard back from - Yale, Vassar, Williams, Emory (not oxford at emory), Columbia and Bowdoin. And the extra one I picked N Dame ( haven’t heard back from Questbridge since my email 11/30 and one today) did email me and told me to have Questbridge forward my application. I don’t think Notre Dame was non binding - I only thought Y,S,P

Notre Dame was non-binding, I am pretty sure of that, but it doesn’t really matter now because match is over.

Oh I didn’t hear from Emory hmmm did you guys only hear from the schools you did for match or indicated for your application to be forwarded for RD? because I got a email from Trinity and I didn’t even say that I wanted to apply for Trinity on my application.

The only schools I matched were Columbia and Yale all the others I checked the box to forward for regular decision. I received a Wellesley, Trinity and Rice even though I never checked.

Beside aeschina was there anyone involved with TASP? Any out of the 200 + that got matched?

OK now I understand why N Dame said because I didn’t put them on my top 8 I couldn’t do EA.

aeschina did you actually do TASP? if so, I seriously won’t worreid about admission stuff because TASP kids go to great schools in the end anyway

Nope neither of us did although I did get to the interview phase and then had the “interesting” interview. But you know I’m not one of those U Chicago (no offense) type of intellectuals and that’s what TASP is all about - a bunch of “what if the world was made of cotton candy” - people that never had to live in a car - yes I’m making fun of it. Sry TASP was an eye opening and great experience for me because it made me realize what I didn’t want and I had good essays to use. Oh and I have no doubt that if I had of done TASP I would have be matched but then I probably wouldn’t have done Questbridge.

No, I didn’t do the program, I did the application - and even after that, didn’t make it to the interview round. It might have something to do with how I miscontrued two of the questions to be short answer and not full length essays. It was a good exercise though.

Ironically enough, I did a summer progam at a college campus that TASP was residing at too - I didn’t even remember until I heard one of the librarians talking about it to another librarian, and I was struck with how much fun I was having at that summer program. I’m not saying fun isn’t possible at TASP because I know little about it, but I don’t regret my experiences.
