Question about Ec's

I take all honors and AP classes at my school. (some courses only offer honors if that) I have a 4.1 weighted GPA (3.65 unweighted) I have a part time job during the week so i don’t have as much EC’s as i could have. Will colleges take this into account?

Thanks

For one thing, EC’s aren’t that important, unless you did something out of the ordinary (like you were a castmember on a tv show or something.) As long as you have a good amount of involvement, you should be fine. That being said, your academic involvement isn’t an excuse for a lack of ECs. I probably had more APs and honors classes than you, as well as a higher GPA, and still managed to do a good amount of EC related stuff. Also, don’t sell yourself short with regard to ECs…your job will probably count for something.

What do you do with the money from your job? Do you help support your family? Are you saving to put yourself through college? Are you using it to buy the latest video games? I think how much the colleges take into account your job and low EC involvement will depend on your reasons for having a job. It is always a positive thing to have a job on your application, but if you want to use it as a reason for not having much EC involvement, you would need to have a good reason why you HAD to have the job. It also depends on what types of schools you’re looking at. Many students at top schools are VERY involved in their academics and extracurriculars. I don’t think top schools will take into account your courseload or GPA when looking at ECs, because there will be many other students with even tougher courseloads and better GPAs. Like I said before though, if you work a lot during the week and have a very good use for the job, that could be taken into consideration.

I agree with cavalier though - don’t sell yourself short though and having a job will count on your application.

Yea i guess i posted this wrong. I wasn’t tryin to say that my academic involvemnt was the cause of it. My EC’s are like average…i was basically jus wondering how much having a p/t time would help. Thanks tho
