I know people always tell you not to write about controversial topics in college essays (religion, politics, etc)
but do you think it would be ok (meaning, not harmful) if I wrote about how reading darwin’s origin of species made me question my religion for the first time and come to adopt agnosticism on my own?

I usually tell groups to ignore the advice your referenced. Admission officers don’t have to agree with you to like the way you express yourself.
