Hey guys, I got a question for all the jefferson scholar finalists.

What is your parents profession, and what is their combined income?

Your probably wondering why I am asking, well it is because my friend is bent on the fact that the jefferson scholarship is based on your prestige and your background, and not your intelligence and drive to succeed, so I am trying to prove to him that there is little to no correlation between the Jefferson Scholar finalist and their parents income.

If you could help me out, I’d really appreciate it, thank you very much

I’m not a finalist, though I may still be. My mom is an admin assistant for the University of Maryland Baltimore and my dad is a Sales Engineer for Verizon. Neither are jobs that lend “prestige” to our family name, nor do we make a bundle of money. We’re not poor, but we’re not rolling in it.
There was an argument about this same topic about a year ago, on the Jeff thread for the HS class of 2008. I forget how it eventually ended, but I do know that some people were hell bent on thinking they lost because other kids had connections while others made it all the way to becoming a jeff without any amount of external help besides their intellect and charisma.

haha, thanks for the info, so your not a finalist?

Thanks, I’ll be sure to search this up

This smells ■■■■■-like. Who cares what your friend thinks?

I am a Jeff Scholar. My parents are teachers. There goes that “prestige” argument. I know all the scholars in my year. Almost none of them are from particularly prestigious backgrounds. Most that i know have two parents who went to college, but a few have only one college educated parent. A few have parents who are lawyers or something, but no different from the UVA general population. Of course there is data showing that socio-economically advantaged parents have children who are more likely to achieve, but there is a big difference between coming from a family that has some education and coming from one with influence or prestige. Your friend doesn’t know what he is talking about.

I meant that I don’t know yet if I am or not. I’ve yet to hear back if I’m a finalist, though I’ve interviewed to get to that point.

thanks for the productive response there laxtaxi.

Thanks yeswecan, I am definitely gonna tell him about you.
Yes exactly, I told him he had no clue what he was talking about, yet he insisted, so im just gonna be like “stop! your wrong” when i see him, haha

thanks for the help guys
