question to US students about antidepressants

Hi, I’m taking antidepressants (my doctor has prescribed them) and my question -even thought might sound quite silly - is this, when I come to US next year for college, do I need to get them approved by a doctor to be able to keep them, or would noone bother? Also when I need to get a new packet, is it strictly necessary to have a doctor’s prescription with me to get anything from a pharmacy? I’m using Lustral and actually it can be bought without a prescription in my country.

Also for contact lenses, do I again need a prescription or can I just go and buy without one?

Sorry, I just thought that I should better keep it in mind that I’ll be in a brand new society with different rules than those that I’m used to.

Yes, you’ll need a prescription to get them from a pharmacy. I think the same holds for contact lenses as well.

Lustral apparently is a prescription drug in America ( [Sertraline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Sertraline - Wikipedia) )

You need to find out if your current doctor’s prescription will be accepted in the USA when it comes time to refill your prescription. If not, you will need to arrange to have a physician here write a new prescription for you. The student health office can help you find a physician. I would recommend that you find out how many month’s worth of medication you are allowed to bring into the USA with you. Perhaps you can import enough for a year if you have documentation that it is a medical necessity. You need to find out how much the medication would cost in the USA. It may be much cheaper to bring it with you!

If you have the prescription for the contact lenses, you may be able to refill it by ordering the lenses through one of the online services such as [Contact Lenses at 1-800 CONTACTS | World’s Largest Contact Lens Store](http://www.1800contacts.com/)

Thanks a lot to both. I’ll check how much of the pills I can bring and I’ll probably contact a physician when I get there. Also for the contact lenses, the website looks great.
