Questions/Advice

Hi,

I am interested in obtaining assistance with college applications and admissions. The following is my brief history:

1480 SAT ~2001

Attended Indiana Academy for Mathematics, Science, and the Humanities located on Ball State Univ Campus Muncie, IN ~2003

Graduated Hamilton Southeastern High School 4.0 GPA in Fishers, Indiana ~2005

AP Tests: Statistics, Calculus BC, Physics, English Composition, World History

Attended Indiana University on Scholarship for Mathematics Bloomington, IN for one semester but dropped out due to lack of interest ~Fall 2005

Played professional poker and ran three separate successful small businesses managing up to twelve employees ~2005-Present

GMAT Taken (710) ~Summer 2011

After much world traveling and “soul searching,” I believe I am now ready to attend college. Helping and contributing to human society as a means to pursue happiness is my main goal and purpose now. My biggest interests are Mathematics and Physics in the context of new technology and medicine. I would prefer to attend college in an urban environment on either coast or internationally.

Questions:

Can I still apply for scholarships?

When is the soonest I can start school?

Best programs for my interests?

Do my AP tests still apply towards credits? Can I test out of subjects?

If any additional information is required, please ask!

Thanks in advance! :)

Answers, in order would be:

Yes, there will be some universities which offer scholarships to students like you. If I am not mistaken, my university has done so in the past.

Probably in Fall 2012 is the earliest given that the Spring semester is about to start for many schools now.

Since you don’t have much college credit as of yet, enter as an undecided major and look at Mathematics, Physics and possibly Engineering in your first year.

The AP credit will depend on the school and the scores you obtained in your AP tests. Some schools permit credit by examination. The way it works at my university, [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu) is that the student pays a per credit fee and then takes a test for a grade. That grade then appears on the transcript as if the course had been taken.

One thing that might cause a problem is the date of your SAT (2001 you say). usually these test scores only are good for 5 years so it is possible that some schools might wish to have you take it again. You should check with them. On the other hand if you are classified as a transfer student then it might not be necessary.

I was looking at Fall 2012, but it seemed like final application dates were Jan 1. Does this differ from school to school? Am I best off contacting each school directly? Do admissions consultants actually help (or waste of money)?

I suppose I should also mention I took Differential Equations and Linear Algebra as well as a Modern Physics course at the Indiana Academy that were college level. The AP tests were all 5s. If I did have to retake SAT, what has changed? Would GMAT + Writing score work as a fair substitute in that regard?

Thanks for the reply!

Check to see if IU would readmit you after your absence, assuming you were in good academic standing when you left.
