Quick Poll: Mac or Windows?

Firefox, of course. :-)

Mac since DOS 6.0

Self: G5 desktop and iBook
2ds: each have a 12" Powerbook and they share an older iMac (the snowball one)
2dsmom: um…well, we has just upgraded from hardwired phones to wireless. She’s is still trying to deal with that.

All MAC at home and college. I should have kept the old ones, from 1984 on; I could have had a MAC museum. In my office I have an Intel core iMAC. Hospital is all Windows

Poetsheart: you said " But I’ve been thinking about the demographics that comprise the CC community: mostly educated (often highly), mostly politically savvy (and overwhelmingly within the Liberal spectrum, both socially and politically), proudly agnostic/generally religion-wary, largely upper-middle class professional…And apparently, enthusiastic Mac users."

Please don’t assume we all fit all of these parameters. (I am neither politically liberal nor agnostic). Some just make a whole lot more noise than others :)

All Mac, all the way: two G5s, an IMac, a new Mac mini, and a Macbook pro.

Our mini can run Windows too, so it is a pretty cool little machine.

Mac, here at home. But DS has a windows laptop at school - he had to buy his own and the windows machine was less expensive.

windows…

TWO G5s? Wow! AM, you’ve just won me over. By the way, are you married? Oops, I am, never mind (lol). Please tell me they’ve multiple processors…

I suspect this poll is a bit biased because mac users are more likely to respond. Visit any computer store and you will likely find the macs over in a small corner.

My experience with the MAC OS has been good. I found the MAC very easy to use. I did not have good experiences with applications. A couple of years ago my W had problems trying to use jpegs on Powerpoint running on her MAC. There was a severe limitation to the overall file size. I would guess this bug has been fixed, but I do think many applications which are designed for PC’s do not run well on MACs. I also have tons of software and I would not want to re-purchase MAC versions, if they even exist. The costs would be several times more than the hardware. I do understand that MACs are good for graphic editing, but other than that I would guess most MAC users mainly restrict use to the internet and wordprocessing.

Churchmusicmom, notice I used the term, “mostly”. I don’t happen to fit that demographic either. I consider myself a political moderate, not particularly educated, and definitely NOT financially prosperous. We don’t own a Mac either (though it’s not because I haven’t seriously lobbied for one).

I don’t fit that demographic. Where I work the people who work with color images seem to prefer Macs. Mac owners tend to be more outspoken about their choice, which may skew this online survey.

gentoo linux is for self admitting masochist. Ubuntu for the win :p

I’m a current Mac user who might find himself coaxed into getting a Lenovo in the next couple of years…who knows.

So far so good.

Question though: why do people insist upon making “Mac” into an acronym (MAC)? It’s a shortening of Macintosh, a type of apple…

Oh well, not a big deal, but I’ve often wondered that.

Can someone reccomend me a good and sturdy Mac laptop? I prefer one that is easy to carry and lightweight yet easy to use. I will be attending college next fall and I want to try a Mac!

Thanks!

ForeverA,

Well, you only have two choices, so it depends on whether you want the beefier vid card or not…

Forever, both my daughters have the iBook, now called the MacBook.

See: http://www.apple.com/macbook/</a></p>

They have been durable, reliable laptops for them. You should be eligible for an educational discount. Buy Microsoft Office for Mac as well. FSU, for example, has it’s own computer store http://www.computerstore.fsu.edu/jez/CatalogModule/home_page.jsp?heading=&manufacture=</a>
which makes nice package deals for students. Your school may have something similar, or any corporate Apple store will also give you the discount, perhaps even by phone or through their website.

Oh - I thought it was an acronym for Mediocre Apple Computer. :)

ucsducladad,

I repeat…

:p

pearlygate: No, windows is for the self-admitting masochist.

Is that what “Mac” means?

Gosh, for years I thought it meant “Media Access Control” and indicated that the computer had a nic. Silly me.
