<p>Before you go out and buy Microsoft Office for either Windows or Mac for your kid make sure you check out the school discounts. They can be huge for students. In fact the discount on the XP operating system was pretty steep at my sons college.</p>
<p>You are probably asking why would I buy an operating system when every computer comes with one. The answer is dual boot systems. You can install both OSX and XP in separate partitions on a Macintosh and boot up either system you want to use. For other PCs you might want to do the same thing with XP and Linux or FreeBSD if you are a real geek.</p>

<p>My husband and I are theatrical designers (he teaches lighting and film) so we’ve always had Macs. Three desktops and a laptop at home, one G5 in his office. But I’m thinking of getting a low cost PC laptop from our 12 year old,
because his laptop and computer are old. Daughter will get Mac laptop for college in Sept.</p>
