Well it’s my Senior year, USC is my first choice college and I think I have decent stats, 3.6 GPA UW 31 ACT, 2 SAT’s over 720 but this year this is how my schedule looks.

Gov/Econ AP: A

Calc AB AP: B/C

Stats AP: A
Physics: A
English Lit AP: A

Now planning for the worst let’s say I get a C in math, I know I seem paranoid but how will that affect my application overall? I’m not a math person at all and i’m applying as a biology major with a pre med track by the way. I don’t want this to really be a chance thread more of a gauge of how you guys think USC will look at a possible C on a transcript if it’s in a AP class.

I am not sure, i am applying too, just study hard and bring that grade up c doesn’t look horrible on your transcript but it is not good,

Newsflash — bio and pre-med majors are required to take some fairly serious math classes, particularly advanced statistics. How would otherwise our future doctors be able to routinely mis-interpret correlation as causation (e.g., everyone that breathes eventually dies, therefore breathing causes death).

The non-authoritative answer is that a single C, particularly in a class as difficult as Calc AB will not kill you, especially if there is an otherwise upward trend and all other grades are solid — which in your case they seem to be. However, there are two questions to be asked:

1) If you are “not a math person” why are you taking a Calc AB class?

2) It is my firm belief that the difference between B and C in ANY class is merely a matter of effort. If you are smart enough to get an A in AP Stats and regular physics, the only thing standing between you and a B in Calc AB is effort.

as a senior bio major on a prehealth (podiatry to be exact) track, i think i can speak on this issue with some authority.

i was just like you when i applied to school. i got my first (and only) C in the first semester of IB calculus. honestly if you have 1 C, especially senior year it won’t kill you. i tried to make up for it my 2nd semester and i managed to get a B+.

contrary to what GroovyGeek stated, premed/bio students don’t have to take very difficult classes. you have the option of either taking calc1 and calc2, or calc1 and statistics. there are a couple different stats classes you can take, with the most popular ones being MATH208 and then the upper div biostatistics course (not sure of the course number). i would personally recommend taking calc1 (MATH125) and math stats (MATH208). from what my engineering friends say, calc2 is actually harder than calc3 for some reason.
