Randall Research Class of 2028

Good afternoon. Randall Research invites went out this afternoon, and I am creating a thread to connect with other invitees before the interview weekend. My older DD is part of RRSP, and it is such a special cohort. Roll Tide!

Thanks for starting this! Can you tell us more about your daughter’s experiences? My daughter got her email today, and I’d love to know more about the program! Thank you!

Good morning!

The program has been great for my daughter as they really do an excellent job of cultivating the cohort. They do a lot to bring the students together socially, and many of them end up rooming together in the later years. It’s also so nice for the students to see familiar faces in the classroom on day 1 of classes! Also, the research component is great. Most professors are instantly interested when a student mentions being part of the Randall Research program. Overall, it’s been great.

Do you have any specific questions? I am happy to try to answer them!

Curious how this might help after graduation.
What’s the internview “weekend” like?
Any way to expedite the Randall classes if possibly graduating early?

Do you know how many students are invited and how many are offered spots in the program? My son just got his invite yesterday

I think it helps in a couple of ways. First, Randall Research is a great network in and of itself. Most of the kids in the program are extremely high achievers, and they help one another. The network remains after graduation. Second, the research itself provides great experience to put on a resume. I will add that they told my daughter’s cohort during interview weekend that Randall Research is not for people who just want to do research (that can be done through several avenues); it’s for people who want to do research within a community. The community aspect is a huge portion of the program, and it’s my daughter’s favorite part.

The interview “weekend” is largely about getting to know the current RRS students as well as the other interviewees. If I remember correctly, it starts with a campus tour. There is a dinner that evening where the interviewees mingle with current RRS students. On Monday morning, they have breakfast, and each student has an actual interview (around 15-20 minutes). Also, the students meet with representatives from their specific department/major on Monday. I am sure that it not comprehensive.

There is no way to expediate Randall classes. They must take one per semester. However, the Randall Research minor is completed in 6 semesters, so early graduation may not necessarily be a barrier (depending on how early your student wants to graduate). Senior year classes are optional.

Congratulations to your son! In the past, around 60 finalists have been invited to interview weekend, and each cohort aims to have 40 students in it. For my daughter’s cohort, they got a group email prior to the interview weekend, and one of the attendees put together a Group Me.

My son hasn’t shared his Randall email with me so maybe the info is already in there. But need to do anything to prepare for the event? Dress code throughout? Thanks

Nothing to prepare. The dress code email will likely come later (after they accept the invite), but it was casual. I think they said “jeans” in my daughter’s year. My son will likely wear khaki slacks because he can’t stand jeans. They want them to be comfortable walking around campus, etc. They definitely didn’t need anything business professional.

What is your student planning to major in? My son is currently mechanical engineering, but he is also considering computer science or computer engineering.

My son is likely mechanical, but likes the metallurgical side of things too. Considering Blount also. Our older son is a UA senior studying ME and may go on to Aerospace grad school.

I hope that they all have a great time!

Hi! Son participated in RRSP Finalist event earlier this week and thoroughly enjoyed. Anyone have an intel on when we are likely to hear? Has anyone heard? Son is also a finalist for UFE. Some chance the 4 who are both will hear later from the programs, maybe.

Glad your son enjoyed the weekend! My son absolutely loved it.

I don’t have any specific intel, but based on previous years, they will try to release decisions by next Friday. I am hoping for next Wednesday-Friday.

Got it! Thanks! Sounds like they don’t notify until after UFE weekend, maybe. No understanding that the two programs coordinate. Looking for an email like other communications?

How was the UFE weekend?

He loved it!!

Has anyone heard anything from RRS?

Decisions are out. Good luck to all!
