Atrocities are still happening. Over 1,000 Alawites were killed a few months ago, because Assad was an Alawite. My DILâs family had to hide in their home. They were without power and water for days. My DILâs sister managed to get out of Syria, but the rest of her family is still there.
Really interesting.

I saw them once, in the early 80s at Madison Square Garden.
This article is from 2021, but I thought it was pretty good, considering how our adult son is behaving. The articleâs author wrote a book that I just ordered.

Canât read the article but Iâm going to guess most of it is a pretty simple reason. The millionaires are more likely to be older and retiring and downsizing - not wanting all that comes with âownershipâ and also likely to be doing more traveling so renting a condo/apartment makes the most financial sense.
This is exactly what I figured was a reason:
For those with the means, renting can free up cash to invest elsewhere, like in the stock market, where those investments can be sold quickly. Homes are taking longer to sell: The average time on the market surpassed prepandemic levels for the first time in July.
I am seriously thinking of selling my house within the next few years and renting. House is paid off so Iâm not getting a tax deduction. I donât want the maintenance. There are some lovely rental apartments in my neighborhood. If I donât like renting (or the specific rental) I can just leave when my lease is over. I âm actively getting rid of stuff now with this in mind.
Neither my FA nor my lawyer thinks that this is a bad idea,
Had a colleague at Goldman Sachs many years ago where he took this approach. His wife was a military brat so she was used to not owning a home. For him, it wasnât just the liquidity. He thought that he was a sharp investor and that the return on his portfolio would far exceed any appreciation on on the house and that investing was a better use of his capital versus a down payment on a house. He retired at a relative young age. Not sure if it was because of this strategy or because he was the most frugal person that Iâve ever met. Even traveling on business together in the 80s, we had to stay at an Embassy Suites because of the free breakfastâŠ.
