Big Time Off: Consider Taking a Career Break

My son is currently on a career sabbatical. He had a very difficult surgery that has a long recovery period (negative catalyst) which thankfully coincided with business success (positive catalyst) that has allowed him to coast financially for an extended period. He is just now creating a new business plan that wouldn’t have been possible if he hadn’t had this break. I think it’s much easier to take a break before marriage and children arrive.

We actually chose H’s ER most recently based on how promptly and well he was cared for when we had been there last time, compared to the 3 prior visits to a different ER. They scanned his ID & medicare & insurance cards, whisked him off to do his vitals and put him in a bed in a comfortable room subdued lighting and were pretty quick to give him IV fluids for hydration. They also checked on him multiple times to see if he needed anything, a warm blanket or anything else

The other ER has a large homeless population nearby and they end up in the ER. Several times H’s room was a prep room/hallway where staff kept walking through the entire time he was there. There was no privacy and it was not restful at all.

We much prefer the ER we’ve been to the past 2 times and happily our primary care docs are in that medical system so it works better all around for us. Not positive it was “geriatric care,” tho H is now 84, but we both found it much more relaxing than the other med center.

Money Troubles Could Speed Up Brain Ageing, Study Finds

Storm Newton, Press Association

July 24, 2026

Money troubles that drag on for years, rather than come and go, appear to age the brain faster, new research suggests.

The effect was particularly pronounced among men, those who had disadvantaged childhoods, and people with a greater genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Supporting those facing financial hardship and reducing poverty could help prevent dementia cases in the future, researchers suggest.

Saw this the other day in our local paper that unfortunately doesn’t allow gift links so couldn’t post.

Note that this study used not just any plain weed product from a dispensary.

“Researchers commissioned a Canadian pharmaceutical cannabinoid company to develop the oil, which contained 2 milligrams of THC and 100 milligrams of CBD per milliliter. Half the participants received a placebo oil. The others received 1 milliliter twice daily for a week, then double that dose for 11 weeks. THC is a psychoactive; CBD is nonintoxicating.

“The difference between us and Joe that sells marijuana across the street is that we actually have a purified, biologically active compound, and we did a scientifically valid experiment with this compound at a certain dose at a certain frequency and for a specific indication,” Dr. Mintzer said.”

This makes sense, because stress is a huge factor in inflammation. Inflammation causes lots of health issues.

Over the past quarter century, about two-thirds of Gallup poll respondents have consistently said they drink wine, beer or liquor regularly or on occasion. Last year, that figure dropped to 54 percent, the lowest in 90 years. Among 18- to 34-year-olds, the number fell to 50 percent. Counterintuitively, Gallup researchers found that the decline did not appear to be caused by a turn toward recreational cannabis.
