Rape, Sexual Assault, and Drug Use in Greek Life (the "Cornell 7" specifically, but also generally)

I really can’t find much about male rape on campus at all, but there is a bit more stuff on it in general. There does seem to be one exception to what you posted above: that when men get assaulted in gay bars, they seem to often get the same kind of “what did you expect to happen” response as we have seen here with “what did she expect to happen at a frat party”.

Good point. But worth noting that split mind and split brain (the term used above) are different concepts.

If we are talking about SAs on college campuses, it’s often treated as invisible rather than victim of a criminal act, much like your earlier post with the “colloquial” comment about the 0.001% rate and comment about not spending energy on it as a societal issue . This also relates to why many people in the thread appear to be unfamiliar and SJ2727’s comment above about finding little information, even though surveys suggest ~17% of SA victims on college campuses are male. In the rare instances during which events are reported, they are more likely to be dismissed as a bad hookup by campus investigators and are rarely discussed in public media, so little opportunity for the general public to ask questions about victim. Penalties also tend to be less severe.

I heard a fascinating discussion on The Michael Smerconish Program (radio) this morning. His guest was a woman who was formerly a lawyer but who transitioned into becoming an educational consultant early in her career, helping families navigate the complexities of dealing with the system when behavioral issues have interfered with a son or daughter’s ability to function in school. She has dealt with many cases like this one, 363 cases of different kinds in total. She studied this case in preparation for this morning’s interview. Her conclusion was that there’s a lot that we don’t yet know. She then stressed that information is important. Very important. The second thing that she stressed is that these situations don’t happen without alcohol or some other substance abuse either by the victim, the perpetrator, or both. She said that over 90% of the cases like this with which she has dealt have in fact involved alcohol or drugs, that she could count on one hand the number of cases that didn’t. She stressed that she was not victim blaming, but it’s just a fact. A critical fact. She talked about how dangerous alcohol is for these kids and that the 9 shots of vodka consumed by Jane Doe at her sorority alone could have killed her.

This is a call-in show. After the initial interview, the first caller was a woman from Texas who is a prosecutor and who has prosecuted many cases like this. She sounded genuinely saddened by the wreckage of lives that she has seen. She too stressed that the issues in these cases are life and death. She was particularly upset by the fact that those involved don’t realize that their actions can land them in jail and ruin their lives.

The next caller was a retired detective whose career had been spent in a college town. He has investigated many similar cases. Same story, 90+% of cases he investigated involved drugs and alcohol. He was pessimistic about the effectiveness of educational programs because we’ve been trying such an approach for 40 years, but when people are under the influence, they don’t think rationally and they don’t make rational decisions.

The program is available on the Michael Smerconish podcast. It was his 3rd hour long segment on this case in the past week or so.

Posts hidden in this thread fall into two categories: rule violations and replies to already-hidden posts.

A reminder on forum rules: calling another user “tone deaf” violates Rule 1. Arguing semantics (“I didn’t call you tone deaf”) is off-topic. Unless you’re a moderator on this thread, please flag rule breaches rather than taking on a moderating role yourself. Furthermore, claiming that forum rules infringe on one’s rights is off-topic and disingenuous. If a post is hidden or removed, it was done for a reason—do not repost it.

Let’s get back on topic.

There was another past cc’er who was active in F.A.C.E. They have interesting recommendations on their site for those accused of sexual assault. Wrongfully Accused of Sexual Misconduct? Act Now

Thanks for posting this link. They don’t get much publicity. much appreciated.

She also wrote the Slate opinion piece I posted above.

Thanks for the shout-outs, folks! In addition to Tapper and the Smerconish podcast, I was also on CBS 24/7 with Elizabeth Cook and the Martha MacCallum podcast. Right now, I am booked to be on Smerconish’s CNN show Saturday morning and on C-SPAN during the same hour (9 AM Eastern, 6 AM for me on Pacific time!). I have talked to a bunch of print media as well. The CBS and CNN clips are pretty easy to find and not paywalled.

More damaging leaks about Jane Doe’s case. [1]

On November 7, Mattew reaches out … “My ex told me that I’m being labeled as an assaulter in the public eye, I was going to ask if you may have said something along those lines to someone but i know you wouldn’t.”

Jane denies saying anything and claims “people are changing the narrative because like in any sexual scenario w one woman and many men the woman was probably victim.”…

Jane agrees people on campus are “jealous” of them, then gets philosophical about sex.

She writes … “but also like everyone needs to grow up cause sexuality and sex and s**t is changing and stuff like this is going to become more common, i’m also really open minded tho.”

These statements are not inconsistent with lack of consent for having sex with a whole bunch of the people involved.

I don’t think men realize how bizarre it is to experience ANY type of sexual assault. In college after final exams, I was at the Student Union, playing video arcade games. A “nice” guy started talking to me. He told me he was about to start medical school. He offered to walk me back to my dorm since it was dark. What was I thinking?? I said sure, and when we were in an unlit area, he pretty forcefully tried to kiss me. I pushed him away, and thank God some people happened to approach and he slunk away. As he left, I called out, “Good luck in medical school!” What the heck? I can’t even believe I would say that!

When my sister was a college freshman and we both lived in the same nice private dorm, she was going out to her car one evening - it wasn’t even totally dark yet. A guy jumped out of the bushes. He wasn’t wearing any pants. He tried to grab her but she was able to get in the car and lock the door. She called the police but they never caught the guy. It was pretty traumatizing for her. I really don’t think most men have any clue how very common sexual assault is. And my sister and I were LUCKY!

Where did you find this - i.e. source.

I do think there’s going to be so many angles here but I also know, we don’t know what we don’t know.

But are the waters being muddied in advance - absolutely.

My bad – “split mind”, the Greek meaning of Schizophrenia. Not “split brain”.

As for psychosis, I understood it to mean a disconnect from reality – the inability to tell what is real from what is not. Someone who is psychotic could thus commit acts of violence/SA without being aware of it – unable to make an informed decision to refrain, and unable to adequately evaluate stimuli or anticipate effects.

“Split mind” is a euphemism/expression meant to convey that state.

But at least there are meds to treat psychosis. There is nothing to treat ASPD (right?).

(I am not a psychologist, but I did relish “Psych 401: Abnormal Psychology” at UW-Madison. And I stayed at a Holiday Inn. hehe)
