Recs should be very excellent. Written by my AP USH and AP Eng teachers from last year. My english teacher has a reputation for writing recs that are very out of the ordinary/appealing :p.

Essays should be good as well. They probably won’t be anything inspiring, but should be well written and be able to convey some characteristics that would appeal to admissions.

I realize my chances are hurt by my poor freshman year, I’m hoping that admissions may overlook it a little more than the other years and will note the large improvements I’ve made.

Frankly, I’m putting a lot of weight into my SAT scores and hard class load to get me in. Any opinions or suggestions would be received gratefully. :)

Not a great chance. Your GPA is low and your rank (I’m assuming) will be correspondingly low. Your SAT score is nice, but many applicants will have equally difficult courseloads and better grades.

This is very true. But would you agree that GPA would be slightly more negligible in this case, when being compared to my overall secondary school report, as the average is greatly affected by one very poor year, compared to two years that were fairly good?

Not necessarily, because your rank will still suffer. Also, your two middle years won’t be much more than mildly competitive in the applicant pool. How do you stand relative to your peers? Does your school rank? What are the GPA’s like of other people from your school getting into UVA/W&M?

i know three guys that got in with your stats (one had lower GPA, but took multivariable/matrix algebra 12th, and BC calc 11th) ED last year, so you should be ok, i wouldnt say you have no chance, but you’re definently in the middle to lower spectrum

My school doesn’t rank, but UVa receives many applications from my school every year, so they probably have an idea of where I stand.

Relative to my peers, my standing is pretty low based purely on GPA (probably top 20%). I’ve looked at a book my school keeps of GPA/# of AP’s/SAT for all applicants. In terms of GPA, I’m clearly in the bottom half of students admitted to UVa. But I’ve also got more AP’s than most who were admitted (there are only a handful with 9 or more) and my SAT (M and V) is in the highest portion of students who got in.

Of the people I know who were accepted ED to UVa this year, most of them were 3.7+ GPA, but much lower SAT scores than mine (1300-1400 M&V).

I only know one person who applied and was admitted into SEAS ED and he had a 3.7, lower SATs (720-M, not sure about others), and only 4 APs and a couple honors total.

My brother was admitted two years ago with a 3.6, a 1420, and only 5 AP’s and one or two honors. I know it’s an anomaly, but it leads me to believe I have a decent chance too :p.

your upward trend will help you somewhat. but its gonna be tough coz of those C’s. since ur instate, take a shot at it.
