At work the other day, we were discussing the recent movie dud of Bewitched, and the original series. Our topic turned to who we’d like to see in the roles if a movie remake held true to the series. We came up with our own dream cast using only today’s living actors. We thought of:

Samantha Nicole Kidman
Darrin Jim Carrey
Endora Christine Baranski
Maurice Michael Caine
Larry Tate Steve Martin
And we thought we’d throw in an aunt played by Betty White.
We thought to skip Tabitha, Adam, Uncle Arthur and the Kravitzs and other lesser characters, except the following:

We did think we’d add the following:
Dr. Bombay- while we like originals to reprise their roles, we think Fox, if still alive, would be too old to be the wisecracking nurse chasing doctor. We think Robin Williams is well suited now.
We had a tie between Kate Beckinsale and Debi Mazar as either a witch or a mortal competing for Darrin’s affection as was often a storyline in the original.
I’d add a cameo with Bernie Kopell reprising his role as the apothecary.
Lastly, I’d put in a tiny cameo with Fairuza Balk, looking Goth, and maybe Samantha saying “Haven’t I seen you before?” or something like that. Movie buffs will get that “inside joke.”

Anybody like to make their suggestions to improve on this one, or to make another dream cast for some other classic?

There was the original series. Then, a couple of years ago, was the Dud movie with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. We were discussing WHAT IF we could do a remake, but this time with the storyline true to the original series, then who would we like to cast in that remake.
We agreed that Nicole Kidman, who was in the dud, was right for the part in our dream cast movie. Or, the premise as stated in post 1- “Our topic turned to who we’d like to see in the roles if a movie remake held true to the series.”
Will Ferrell can sweep up the set after production as far as we’re concerned.

Sorry you were confused by post 1. Hope this make it clearer.
Anybody like to make their casting suggestions to improve on this one, or to make another dream cast for some other classic?

These are the only three characters I really remember from the original. I saw the dud movie, I’m sorry to say. I only remember Nicole Kidman (great) and Will Ferrell (unspeakably awful).

I agree with your casting of Kidman and Baranski, but Carrey is too strange and too strong to play Darren. Darren needs to be second banana to Samantha. He needs to be a nice and fairly normal guy coping with this strange situation, just a bit befuzzled by his wife, unless the balance changes in a remake. Maybe someone like Ben Affleck?

First off now I will have the Bewitched song stuck in my head all day so thanks for that!
I love the idea of Debi Mazar as a witch after Darrin’s affections. Then again, I just love Debi Mazar in general. I see the previous posters point about Jim Carrey but Ben Affleck is too much of a wet noodle for me. Not sure who I would cast as Darrin.
Third, I want to work where you do. We never have interesting conversations…

We also kicked around the idea of Johnathan Silverman as Darrin, and Charlize Theron as Sam. Some thought Robin Williams as Uncle Arthur, but then who as Dr. Bombay? We thought by leaving out Tabitha, main couple could be a bit older, and not exactly be newlyweds as in real Season 1. We felt Darrin could not be a “hottie” as one big feeling of the original show was a “regular looking guy” that was nice, and up-and-coming in his career the beautiful witch falls for; and the adjustments of a mixed marriage ! Remember- SHE’s the pretty one.
Affleck is very interesting, and mulaney sounds great!

I think Nicole Kidman is too hard looking for Sam who was soft and feminine…I think Mandy Moore would fit in my version and love Christine Baranski for the part of Endora.

I say don’t worry so much about the cast and actually write a decent screenplay this time. That’s the problem with so many of these remakes, especially if they have popular cast members - they depend on the memories of the original show and popularity of the cast and ignore the actual story and regardless of who’s in it, it’s a boring flop.

I don’t think there is a screen play that could result in a “Bewitched” movie that I would pay to see - “Bewitched” is just not big screen material - for me.
