Ready To Party.....With Barbenheimer: NO SPOILERS PLEASE

I did not figure it out at the time, but did look it up on the internet. I like it when filmmakers play with the medium like that, but sometimes I miss the intent. I think it was in West World I was supposed to notice that some scenes were letter box format and others were normal, but I never noticed the change so I never got the message.

i did not catch that muted color point of view till now. Want to go back and watch it again. I agree that it was hard to keep all of the characters straight. But we really did like the movie.

the barbie movie; it was sort of fun; enjoyed the nostalgia, ken was great; but i wouldnt probably share with younger kids. not because the content is “too adult” — but because it would probably be over their head and not make sense.

Finally got to see Barbie movie today. My husband is out of town, and daughter suggested we meet to see it. It involved driving to Westminster (toward Denver - gasp, not my usual cup of tea). But I got to experience the movie, my kid, and the Alamo theater where you can order food and beer.

As expected, not really a kid movie… though we did see a little girl there about age 6. Glad I saw it since it is talked about a lot. And had some laughs too.

Finally saw Oppenheimer. It was good. I liked the use of the color/b&w to denote different POV. Pacing was a bit slow but that’s what I expected from Nolan. I’m curious why IMAX was a big deal because it didn’t seem like the kind of movie where it really made a difference. I found the actual test of the bomb anti-climatic cinematically, perhaps due to the decision to forgo CGI but enjoyed the history around the Manhattan Project.

I think you needed to be in the big screen to get the wow of the big screen.

It’s not like the movie has the usual beautiful shots that we regret the TV. I think it was about the experience. It somehow enveloped you and magnified the severity and tension of the moment. Sound was a huge part of the experience and, in the theater, the score was really what kept the movie from drawing.

I don’t usually care or notice these things but I remember walking out feeling so glad I had bothered to go to the theater.

A quick note that Barbie is on (HBO) Max, free for subscribers. Visually stunning, expertly crafted, excellent acting. I didn’t like Ryan Gosling in La La Land but thoroughly enjoyed him here; he embraced the role. Message felt somewhat heavy handed but I was spoiled for that. I will watch again with husband sometime (he was out tonight) but suspect much of it will pass him by (be over his head ). He’s just Husband.

Saw Godzilla Minus One a couple weeks ago. I never saw Barbie, but Godzilla Minus One was waaaaay better than Oppenheimer. I’m being serious.

Finally saw Barbie this weekend. Thought it was good but as @Marilyn said the message, while so very true, was a bit heavy handed. What was great was how creative and different it was a movie and the humor.

I finally watched it last weekend as well. I agree with your assessment. Overall it was entertaining since I knew what to expect.

You know, the first time I saw Barbie, after listening to America’s rant, I thought, “Well, that’s a little exaggerated”. Made me uncomfortable, sitting beside my husband. Second time I watched it, I thought, “Okay, she has some good points, maybe not all applicable to me, but probably for some women”. The third time I saw it, I thought, “Hallelujah, sing it sister!”

It’s interesting how you change your opinion after you think about things for a bit.

Goodness, I felt the same way!

I’m not going to see the movie three times, but while I might think sometimes the rant was exaggerated, the fact that at least half the movie goers when I saw it (the female half) burst out cheering, was cathartic, and also an indication that it’s all too true.

Finally saw the Barbie movie last night on HBO. I enjoyed it but H fell asleep on the couch.

I watched Barbie at home the second time, with Just Husband (capitalized and impersonalized as per @Marilyn , haha). He enjoyed the movie, but like some others, thought America’s rant was a little over the top. I said “you’ve never been a woman.” He conceded that point.

The rant was the 1st best thing about the movie. If only one man shifted his perspective even a bit, it was worth sidetracking the movie for those few moments. The second best thing was the Kens dancing. Loved that.

I’ll see Barbie again sometime, and Oppenheimer too. I feel there’s a lot more to pick up on with Oppenheimer that I missed the first time, especially after going to Los Alamos this past September.

The Oscar nominations are out. I’m in the camp that believes Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were deserving of nominations.

I really enjoyed the movie but don’t think it is worthy of best picture or any acting awards.

I do think Barbie was deserving of a best director nomination - a beautifully executed original vision throughout. Re acting, I’m no expert. But sometimes a portrayal that seems easy and natural where you don’t even think they’re acting, takes more craft than a highly dramatic portrayal that screams acting. Do you see the character, or the actor?

I haven’t seen most of the movies so can’t judge, unlike television where I’d seen most of the award winning series.

Ken got a nomination and Barbie didn’t? Greta and Margo were robbed. IMHO of course.

America got the nomination for best supporting actor, just like Gosling.

I’m amazed Barbie was nominated for best picture. The Oscars usually shun popular movies and have since the mid 2000s. My friends and I always joke that we know which movies will get the most nominations/win best picture because they’re the ones we haven’t seen and have no interest in doing so.

IMO the acting isn’t Oscar quality but Ryan gosling stole the show in many ways so I’m happy he received recognition. It’s unlikely he’ll win. The set production deserves recognition as well as I’d argue the soundtrack/original songs.
