Sadly ironic, don’t you think?
I do have to say that I think he was a spot on Ken, and I’m happy to see him get the best supporting actor nomination. But Greta Gerwig in particular not getting a nomination? Ugh. And Margot was outstanding.
The famous Mad Men quote seems appropriate:
Peggy Olson: You never say thank you!
Don Draper: That’s what the money’s for!
Oscar snubs for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robie seems quite unfair. And is getting a lot of negative press, especially for Gerwig as making the point of the movie.
Finally rented Barbie at home. I wanted to see it because of the Oscar controversy. I have to say, I thought Ryan Gosling’s Ken arc was more complex than Barbie’s. I think he totally deserved that nomination. I don’t have strong feelings about Robbie, but Greta Gerwig was robbed. I wondered how she would pull off the whole premise, but she set it up so perfectly in the first five minutes. I really think she did an amazing job with this film.
Has either Robie or Gerwig made a statement? (not that they should - just wondering)
I haven’t seen one and don’t expect to. Could come off as sour grapes. Gosling’s statement was great.
They won’t need to. There wil be enough complaining and outrage on their behalf. It’s in full swing already.
Yes, it gets kind of tiring. Gerwig was nominated for Lady Bird a few years ago, which was an outstanding movie. Robbie was a nominee for both supporting and lead actress in the past. I don’t think there’s any great conspiracy, or double standard, irony, etc. I already see complaints about the new diversity rules getting them shut out.
I loved the movie - it really revitalized going to the movies, but were they worthy of Oscar nominations? IMO an argument can we made for director, but not leading actress.
I thought Ryan Gosling was hilarious as Ken and totally deserves the nom. Margot Robbie was great also, but not sure it was quite Oscar caliber (when compared to some of her other roles). Same for America - other than her viral speech in the movie, was there really any depth to her character? Should there have been a nomination for Kate McKinnon?
The nominations are subjective. Lots of people loved Barbie and it touched on a lot of important issues but it’s not typically the type of movie that Oscar rewards - and does it really matter? People have been singing the praises of Barbie, particularly Robbie & Gerwig, ever since it came out. There’s no doubt that it resonated with the ticket-buying public. There’s no debating that Gerwig is a talented director and Robbie and accomplished actress.
It’s unfortunate that the perceived “snub” is taking away from Ryan and America’s nominations, resulting in them having to issue statements. At the end of the day, it’s an awards show. They can’t have 10 nominations per category and only one person (or group) can win each.
Well said.
I watched Barbie three times…once with my mom on my bday…(I’m in my 50’s and my mom is 80), once with a dear friend, and once with my hubby and oldest son (3rd year college).
Great movie.
But I completely agree on all you wrote!
