Really Bright Kid here, just getting serious about college.

People tell me that i am exceptionally a bright student and learner.

I dont regret it, but If I had a chance of going back and changing my early high school years i would change one thing: My confidence. You see, I am raised by a single mother, and life is already hard enough as it is. I have moved around the states many times, and quite possiblily i have attended 4-5 different high school by now…

A little history about me: My family are immigrants from Pakistan, we came here as refugees, were granted asylum, now we are full citizens. As i came here to the states It was hard to adjust but once i did adjust, oh man life became so much more fun…that is in my late high school years. Before that time it was very hard, I was raised by a single mother, in some bad areas. BUT I was exceptionally good at academics, I barely had to put effort into academics yet i would likely come out with a B or A-. In my high school freshman year i was very skinny 120lbs at 5’6. Academics were one thing, but I really wanted to gain confidence in everything. So i set up a plan for me to gain weight, by sophmore year i was 160lbs, and very muscular. One objective down, another objective of mine was to become more social, so I started making contacts wherever i went, adults, teens, the elderly, if they were interesting i kept in touch. Another objective down. Due to me moving around many high schools i didnt get a chance to stay and join many clubs, but i travelled alot. We went from Georgia to Tennessee to Kentucky To Texas, To Boarding School in Indiana, then finally back to Georgia.

Now in my junior year, my next objective is to become a hard-core academic machine. I want to go into a pre-med program at Princeton University, Emory, or John Hopkins University. I took Trigonometry this year, and I exceeded with a 95% avareage in class. You see I dont do this for college, i have a passion for Mathematics, and Science, I just want to get into a very good university to pursue my passion. This passion is undescribable, i have had it since i was in elementary school, ever since i found out what an atom was i became more and more intrigued. Anyways another strong point of mine was Physics, my Physics proffesor reccomended himself that i take AP Physics next year, not just because of my grades, but because of my effort and the fact that I was group leader, and engineer in most of my groups PBL-Based learning projects.

Anyways im not going to write anymore, your assesment of my character should be made by these paragraphs, let me just say I am humbled, solemn, and serious to be somebody. I will not take my mothers sacrifice for nothing…

So how do i asses in your eyes?

Do i have potential to go to Princeton or other Ivies? I know I am fully capabale of undertaking any task if i am serious.

Anyways i am tired of living a mediocre life, i want to be a somebody, i want to get into medicine.

Let me add that i am very down-to-earth, real person, i have been thru many experiances, both horrible and blissful.

bump

so what do you guys think?

Ivies are a long strech, but i know i can create some amazing thesis, or some entreprenureal achievement, bet that would look good on the resume! Then i might have a good chance…maybe

Is 2.7 your overall GPA or just your junior year GPA? If your junior year is significantly better, then MAYBE you have a shot. If it isn’t, then you’re in trouble. That doesn’t mean you can’t still go to a great school, even one or two of the ones on your list, but Princeton will be a HUGE reach either way.

2.7 is my junior year score, my overall would be between 3-3.2

I really want to go to Princeton, I am a fan of their teaching methods, and am also a fan of John Nash

Does going to a prestigious boarding school help?

The thing is, that there are TONS of kids who really want to go to Princeton. And they’ve been working harder for longer. The ‘I just got serious’ explanation won’t work for them.

Adn 2.7 in the most important year, will kill you. It’s OK to goof off as a freshman and even a sophomore, but after that you can’t.

Look at LACs, especially ‘funkier’ ones who will be more able to take into account your late academic bloom.

Im sorry what are LACs?

Im still going to reach for princeton, though.

O and thanks for replying

O i see, did you mean Liberal Arts Colleges?

If so, then how are these choices?

Amherst University
Colgate University
Tufts University

Is it possible to transfer over to an ivy league school if you do exceptionally well in your undergraduate studies?

Btw which colleges are the “funkier” ones?

What boarding school do you go to? Exeter? Andover?

You really need to start reading the hand writing on the wall. You aren’t going to get into Amherst, Tufts, Duke, Stanford, UPenn, Princeton ,or Cal Tech. Very little chance at Emory, Vandy, JHU, NYU. GT and UW are possible, but you need to seriously look at your stats and find some schools that you have a legitimate shot at, then find some safeties. I don’t care what else you have, the 2.7 GPA is a killer at top 25 schools.

Heath: don’t let anybody convince you that you cannot get into any college that you want to go to. Work your hardest and write great, thoughtful essays for college. With your background no one knows what an admissions committee will be thinking. Just make sure that you apply to some schools that you like and consider your stats to be in the top 25% so that come May you will have a variety of college choices.

Your current list is too top heavy with difficult admissions schools. You either should add a few schools or drop a few and replace them with a few choices with safer admission rates.

To Conlax, i go to Culver Military Academy. I think my Overall G.P.A. is much higher though

To Sax, what Universities are good alternatives then?

i would say little to not shot at all of those colleges - no real stand out ECs, and lack of commitment and meandering around is something that colleges dont like

Adding to List:

I have taken 3 honors classes in the past three years.

I can tell that you’re obviously a good kid, and your adjustment must have been quite difficult, I know fairly well, as I have many friends at Tufts who have just moved to the US from Kenya, India, Pakistan, Singapore, etc and they all had a very difficult time adjusting. That being said, you will have to work VERY hard and make sure the admissions committee feels overwhelmed as though they just watched a movie like “Pursuit of Happyness” because that is what you’ll need to overcome that GPA for the top schools you would like to attend. I am not going to say you can’t get into Emory, JHU, etc, but you will have to bring up the GPA as much as possible and pour your heart out in those essays, contacting the schools you want to go to most as much as possible, go to info sessions, get interviews, etc. Good luck!

Thanks Duffman, Ill try as hard as possible. Essays shouldnt be a problem though, i love to write.

1/(2 p a’)

it’ll be tough with the GPA…schools would rather see really high GPA and lower SAT/ACT scores. maybe, if you write a compelling essay about your history. also u would need stellar recommendations from teachers saying you’re absolutely brilliant to make up for grades. and once being a refugee would also maybe help.

Hold on here, maybe his school is just really hard. Do you have a class rank? How do your grades compare to other people in your school?
