Recommend: The Pacific

The series on HBO following various members of the First Marine Division from Guadalcanal through Cape Gloucester and now on to Peliliu. Highly recommended. It will then go to Iwo Jim and then Okinawa. I’m listing only the battles because they’re also followed to Australia, after Guadalcanal, and then to a rest / training island called Pavuvu after Cape Gloucester.

I find it much more gripping than the Band of Brothers series about the war in Europe, partly because the episodes build the intense unreality of being in the South Pacific - with the land crabs clacking into your shoes at night and the heat and the constant rain - plus the utter horror of fighting the Japanese to the death in godforsaken places. It explores some very dark places, from suicide to mutilation to being completely broken mentally. It conveys a great sense of the ridiculously awful things the men went through, things are conveyed with an immediacy that can be very disturbing.

I’ve seen the first three so far. I agree that it is good–and important–but both husband and I thought Band of Brothers was more riveting. I’ll keep your comments in mind, though, as I watch the rest.

Do you think many of the current crop of college students are watching?

S1 has. He and his roommates have been watching and think it’s very good.
