Hi, i am currently in 11th grade and will soon be applying to colleges. I have a unique background: I was accepted to Rowland Hall, a prestigious private school in the US, during 9th grade, despite coming from a humble background and receiving my early education in the Philippines. My school is good, and there are a lot of great students, but i really am average compared to the school’s standards. Currently, i am not taking any APs, just an AT Chemistry, and my cum gpa is 3.45/4. I am really interested in the brain so i want to be in a good, medium college that can boost me in taking programs for premed preparation.
I am also looking for a scholarship or a financial aid since we aren’t well off.
Are you a US domestic (US citizen or US permanent resident) student, or are you an international student for the purpose of US universities?
International students have more difficulty getting financial aid and scholarships at US universities, and most US medical schools do not admit international students.
Congratulations on getting into Rowland Hall with a scholarship ! They should have college guidance so make use of this service at your school.
Are you Questbridge eligible? (Look into it).
Are you considered a resident of any state? Are you a US citizen or permanent resident?
A typical major for your interests would be neuroscience with a side of bioinformatics (or data science major+ neuroscience minor).
Colleges that could be of interest: Wheaton MA, St Olaf, St Lawrence, Kalamazoo.
You can take the required courses for medical school admissions at just about any four year college in the U.S. (arts conservatories excluded).
Please answer the question about your citizenship because that does have an impact on medical school admissions in the U.S.
Go to the U of Utah (your in state) for undergrad. Major in anything you love, that you can do well in. Your best bet for med school will be Utah, since it is in state for you. Do well there, you can get into residency anywhere, although Utah odfers great medical training right up through fellowship.
You can of course go elsewhere, but luckily you have a great option in state. The higher your high school GPA, the more merit aid the U willl give you.
If you are not a US green card holder, or citizen, but are a phillippines citizen, you can look into med school there.
The road to neurosurgery is one of the most difficult in all of medicine. There are limited residency spots per year. Typically most applicants have AOA credentials (medical school honors) along with research and top board scores. Neurology is not as difficult, but still challenging.
“Medium” in which aspect? By selectivity?
Hi! Thank you so much!
No, i don’t think i am Questbridge eligible .
I am a resident of Utah, I am not a US citizen yet, but i will be in a few months this year.
Thank you very much!
Selevtivity and size:)
Check the Questbridge website to know for sure. You may need to talk with your parents.
Medium size typically means 4,000-10,000, it’s the hardest size to find. Most of these are Catholic and/or don’t meet need. Can you put that criterion on hold till after visits&decisions?
Medium sélectivity: look at the list “A+ colleges for B+students” on USNWR as well as Colleges thar change lives.
Finally, UUtah is a solid state university.
I am a lawful permanent citizen:)
A lawful permanent resident
Then for colleges, you’re a domestic applicant (no differential admission criteria or financial aid) which is very very good.
Still, Questbridge means a full ride, so unless you’re positive your parents are upper middle class and not average middle class or working class it’s worth looking into. Not all students who apply are selected and not all who are selected are matched ie., get a full ride, but all gain invaluable experience in applying to highly selective colleges with excellent financial aid.
I will definitely look into it! Thank you very much:)
Before you can become a doctor of any kind, you need to find affordable colleges that are a good fit academically and socially, where you’ll thrive.
A few have already been suggested on this thread.
First, run their NPC and only keep those that would be affordable. Then, dig into them. (Set size aside for now).
Does any look interesting? Why?<- then we can suggest a whole bunch more - safeties, matches, reaches
