Red or blue? Not states, front door colors!

I am getting ready to paint my front door! The door has been stained and varnished by the builder 17 years ago, but the varnish has gradually succumbed to the elements. I think paint makes more sense and should weather better.

The old varnish has been sanded off, so now comes the hardest part… what color should I pick? I ruled out greens and yellows, so the choice is now down to red or blue hues. The house is light bluish grey with white trim. I know I can always rely on my CC friends for their helpful advice instead of going through endless paint chips at HD, Lowes, and Benjamin Moore.

Help me pick paint for my front door. Thanks in advance!

If your house is already bluish hue, I’d go with a red that would ‘pop’! There’s just something like about red front doors that pop. I think it works well with almost every color of house. I don’t know if I’d say the same for blue, but it depends on what you want. When we finally got a red door, I could always tell people, if you don’t see the house numbers, look for the red front door (well, and we were at the end of a cul-de-sac).

I’m laughing because I was envious that you sanded your door today - I need to do that!

Here is my opinion. I have cape cod two story home. White siding and lots of windows in the front. I painted our front door barn red years ago. I get a MILLION compliments on it! It’s a big old door (actually a dutch door) - it really pops on the outside! All wreaths seem to look great on it!

BUT, truth be told, I am ready for a change. I am leaning towards a clean, brighter not- quite navy door. I’m thinking about a color similar to this:

I will also tell you that I have a door this color pinned on my Pinterest and it is my MOST pinned pin - literally over 1.3K times!

I love colored doors overall. I do love red. I slightly feel that red is a little 90’s. I feel like the blue is more up to date in a way.

My other comment would be that your door hardware, kickplate, etc. can also add to the overall look of your door.

I actually think that the front door is one of the most important features of a house!

Our back door - the more casual entrance to our house off our deck - but the most used door is this color, I love it!! But it’s a little bright for a front door IMO - at least the style of our home:

BB, would you say that your house is more light blue or light grey upon looking at it? And do you mean barn red, bright red or more of a cranberry/maroon???

Scroll down to the third photo here - the craftsman grey with red: to me, beautiful! And fresher looking:

Another blue-grey with red: scroll down a bit: http://www.katyelliott.com/blog/2009/12/snowy-weekend-snapshots.html

My vote is red – I love the combination of grey with red. And I do think a grey house can use a little color. Agree that the hue of red is important.

Here are some blue doors - I am SALIVATING!!!

(I just LOVE doors!!!)

My final word before hitting the sack…just be careful that the blue w/white trim and red door don’t end up looking too “red, white and blue” - flaggish - if that is not a look you would want .

I’m a big fan of light blue/teal front doors. Think haunt blue evocative of porch ceilings and Charleston.

Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue or Benjamin Moore Hazy blue come to mind.

Some of the photos in the link @abasket provided lean towards that look.

Oh my goodness, welcome to the South! Kidding aside, look at Southern Living magazine online. Lots of great blue door colors.

My friend’s house is grey with a bluish tint and white trim, with brick accents. She just painted her front door this color. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/splash

It looks spectacular with her main home color. It’s really fresh and modern looking. Everyone comments about how pretty it is.

*haint blue not haunt.

Thank you for the helpful links! I wish I had two doors to paint! So many great blues… and so many wonderful reds, too.

I like that door you posted @doschicos – but to my eye it would work really well for a beach house or a country cottage.

I’m going to go with blue as well. You don’t see much red here in SoCal and I agree with @abasket that blue is a slightly more contemporary look. I’m somewhat biased as my In laws owned a house on Cape Cod and it seemed as if every door was red! Some of the reds were really too bright so if you decide to go that way I would definitely experiment with different shades. A red door will stand out but it doesn’t need to scream, “look at me!”

I like the shade in abasket’s post #2 or even a slightly darker shade.

Come back and share your decision!

You are looking at my two favorite door colors. We had a dark red front door for years and I loved it. We just very recently painted the whole house and it was time for a change. My house is now a light greenish gray with an off-white trim, and I went with this blue for the door:
http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/marineblue . I absolutely love it and have actually noticed several people taking pictures of the new colors.

So I love both red and blue, but I think that since your house is bluish grey, I would go with the red for a color pop. Maybe something like the caliente red shown here???

Me too! I just looked at BM “wild blueberry” color. It is in photo #5 of this link:

Forgot to mention… Our house is a late 90s “Craftsman” with a covered front porch (complete with a rocker swing  )and river rock columns.

@takeitallin - caliente red :x Love it. Maybe I should paint the back door, too, so I can have both red and blue!
