Red or blue? Not states, front door colors!

Mine is Sherwin William’s Navel Blue and I love it

My house is Sherwin William’s Mindful Gray Hardy Plank

Caliente red looks like the color of my front door of my old house. The siding was a faded green color.
Looked great.

Now my place has a gray siding and a blue painted front door. Looks great.

Our front door is a color that looks like @abasket’s front door (in between royal and navy blue – not sure the exact name). We’re looking to update our facade so we may move away from it but it makes me happy every time I’m by it . You can’t really go wrong, BB. Let us know what you decide.

BB: your house sounds lovely. I think either color works, but the intensity is what matters. That is another decision to make.

Unlike stain, paint is easy to change the color

I would paint a large board and stick it up to decide, though, before I painted. (That’s because I have changed door colors multiple times.) Light at different times of the day changes the color of the paint.

Probably you already know that trick. It took me a while to get there.

I think a lot with depend on whether your house is more gray or more blue. If it’s more blue, you will need to be careful choosing a blue for the door . Many paint stores will sell small containers of test paints. It may be worth it to paint some small paint boards in your choice of colors to make your decision .

Heading out for a few hours but Caliente red IS the color of my front door now! Maybe I can take a photo later…but my house is white. I love this thread!

@BunsenBurner Do you have shutters on your windows?

Just painted our front door blue. It is similar to the blue found in the Greece. We have a tan house with white trim. Have you thought of a deep coral color or turquoise?

My house is light gray siding with white trim. I went with reddish-mauve Laura Ashley paint on the front door, very similar to the Mardi Gras in @takeitallin 's link. I like the contrast of the door against the house. 2-story house with a front porch that runs the length of the house.

Really depends on the color of the siding, so I would probably get a few samples and paint some boards to see how it looks at different times of the day.

sax, no shutters, just wood trim. I love shutters, but I do not think shutters are typical for Craftsmans here in my neck of the wood. The door is not very visible from the driveway. There is a large wood porch that one has to enter first to get to the front door, and that wood is stained “redwood.”

I like a bright orange door on a craftsman-style house. It’s a popular look in Berkeley. I think it looks great.

^Yup, bright orange would work as well. That color is popular on some of the craftsman homes in South Pasadena. I still think I would go with blue for a grayish blue craftsman style. You could choose a shade that would give it a more contemporary look if that’s what you’re going for.

Our old house was grey, and the front door was black.

Voting red just because I like the warm look of a red door.

A light blue-ish grey house with the color in abasket’s post 2 would be beautiful, slightly formal (or do I mean, sophisticated?)

I painted the door dark, dark navy and have to say, it oxidized (it’s the sunny side of the house.) I switched to Terra Cotta (probably Benj Moore, definitely red family, not orange.) (On my laptop, the color online isn’t it, but it looks similar to Claret Rose on your link in post 17.) But white house, black shutters. And yes, nice to be able to tell folks to look for the red (ish) door. Our house is an old foursquare, similar to Craftsman, but in no way a bungalow.

BB, I think you need to test shades of whatever color and see how the style of the house looks with them. Something will speak to you. Some home styles can or can’t take a beachy or colonial colors as well as others. Some doors stand out in the architecture more than others. Then again, I do obsess over paint colors (I’m going to repaint inside and need a good “designer white,” which really means cream- but not too yellow, not too pink, not too tan or grey or green. I’m close.)

As long as you like it, you’ll be happy.

I’ll also say I’m fully jealous of your Craftsman AND porch swing.

Like husbands, I would also say that there is not just one color that will work. The color should speak to you, reflect the style of the home AND make you feel happy and proud when you pull in the driveway.

And then there is glossy vs. satin vs. eggshell…

And the sun.

Our house siding is grayed white cedar shingles with white trim around Windows, painted the front door Benjamin Moore Nova Scotia blue a few years back and it still makes me smile. And it spawned a few other blue doors in the area.

Thank you all for the helpful comments!

The door is now fully primed!! It was a lot of work, phew. At first, I mourned the loss of the gorgeous honey stain, but when I completely covered it in primer, I got excited. White trim and colorful door! I am torn between BM’s Wild Blueberry and Impressionist Ruby colors of their Aura Grand Entrance line of outdoor paints.

Satin or high gloss? I think satin. We don’t have any glossy surfaces around the entrance, so having a glossy door will make it stand out too much.
