Red or blue? Not states, front door colors!

I think Satin for a craftsman style home. Or maybe semigloss.

Agree on satin. I think it’s a fresher look.

Which ever color you choose - if it’s not right, you’ll just need to re-prime and buy another gallon of paint. Not the worst loss in the world!

Probably a pint would do for just 1 door!

Yup! I just used half a quart of primer. The paint guy was trying to warn me that the Aura paint was super expensive. $50 for a quart… No biggie if all I need is a quart!

Good idea to keep some extra paint though (though maybe not a whole gallon) for any bumps, chips or to refresh if sun fades it. (maybe not a problem with your porch!) I always WISH they sold 1/2 gallon size!

Judging by how much primer I have left, I will have some for those jobs, too, abasket!

I vote for blue in a satin finish.

Blue!

I always thought front door colors had deep psychological meanings? But on a recent HGTV show they said when you pay off your house you are supposed to paint the front door RED.

Red if you are a more traditional type of person with more traditional decor. Blue if you tend toward the artsy or contemporary.

Post #48 - hmmm… The house has been paid off.

Thank you for your ideas, all!

I think it’s regional. In the northeast, I’d go for red. In the west or southeast, blue.

We have a clear varnish on the door so ours just looks like wood. I personally love that look. We used to have a very dark green door with a copper kickplate. I was so happy when we finally replaced it with the wooden “natural” door–looks like white oak.

In Wisconsin - so many red front doors - Go Badgers!

I really like varnished doors, but in our climate, all the drizzle and moisture in the air make varnish go bad quickly, as our current experience has shown. So, sadly, it is paint time.

The eave/awning over our front door protects it pretty well, and I love the look and warmth of wood. It goes nicely with our white oak floors. Yes, sometimes nothing beats good paint for protection vs the elements. The pop of color is fun and adds something too.

^^I am keeping the stain/varnish on the inside for that same reason - it looks great with the wood floors and the trim.

@BunsenBurner - Out of curiosity, what are you doing with the interior finish of the door? I have double wood doors that are stained/varnished and need to be refinished. I’m thinking of painting both sides black, but a bold color would look better on the exterior. Not sure what to do with the interior side though.

I like the wild blueberry!

@BunsenBurner I’d do satin vs. gloss.

My vote would be for a deep bronze color, like Sherwin Williams 7055 Enduring Bronze.

I have the interior doors done in 7055 and they are beautiful.

If you wanted a cooler tone to go with the blue siding maybe SW 6173 Cocoon.

MOfD, thanks! Lol, those colors would start a major war in the house! Let me just say that there are 2 things Mr. will not tolerate: vacuuming carpets and having anything painted in a brown-like tone in the house. I pick my battles accordingly, so I am keeping the interior stain. It is in an excellent shape and will last for another 15 years easily. The outside… whole different story. Our houses do not fade, they just get beaten up by rain here in the PNW!
