registering for classes

Does anyone know when we register for classes? Is it during the summer orientations? If so, if we turn in our SIR earlier, does that mean we can get an earlier orientation date? Or does everyone have an equal chance of picking orientation date as long as the SIR is turned in before May 1? Also, is it very difficult to get the class you want? I’ve heard some horror stories from other schools that some classes are very hard to register for because everyone wants it. So for the most part, do UVA students generally get the classes they desire?

rose87, you will register for your classes during summer orientation. I’m not really sure about how you are assigned a session. As far as classes generally you can get into most of the large lecture sections, the upper level classes will likely already be full. I believe that they hold spots in popular classes and open them strategically throughout orientation sessions to give an equal chance to everyone. If you want to look at classes and see how much room there is now check out www.virginia.edu/cod you can browse by different depts. and see the max and current enrollment.

OK I hope there’s some missing information. I just checked the website with the course offerings. At this point, obviously, no first years have registered for classes. Their deposit checks probably have not been cashed or not even have been sent. How is it possible that all Intro to Sociology and Intro to Anthropology classes are already filled? Does the website not reflect what might be set aside for incoming students? Aren’t these the type of classes that first years would be taking? All 3000+ of them? HELP!

Thanks for the info wahoo! Also, I have that same question as bluejay!

They just look full. They add spaces during each orientation session specifically so first years can register for these popular classes. It doesn’t matter which orientation you go to, because they add the spaces at the beginning of each session. It’s quite a nice system that I wish other universities would adopt.

Oh wow, thanks pamvanw! So no one so far knows when registration BEGINS for freshman class?

Rose87, registration begins on each of the orientation sessions over the summer (UVA has like 9 of them).

Slots are filling up. I’ve signed up for the first session of the summer, and heard that they filled it up.

Also I heard that the UVA sophomores, juniors and seniors class registration is already over. So they might have already registered for the same classes you want to go into.

Its true that some of the class you will want are already full…most students in A&S don’t get all the classes they want every semester. It is also true that they hold spots for first years in popular classes but it’s not so many spots that all who want the class will get it.

You can already chose which orientation you want? So it would be in the student’s best interest to turn in the their reply form to register for fall 2005 as soon as possible because you get a closer orienation date that way?

the first session is already full

Does anyone know what I should do if I won’t be here for any of the orientation dates? I’ll only be in the country for the first session but people said it’s been filled.

rose87, contact whoever is in charge of orientation they may be able to put you in the first session if you have a legitimate reason or they sometimes have orientation right before school starts for students who couldn’t make it in the summer

wahoo2007, my reason is because of vacation. Not sure if they would count that as “legitimate” reason. What do they classify as a legitimate reason?

I have no idea, it probably depends who you get on the phone.

you register online for the summer orientation sessions…registration for classes is at orientation, I am not sure but I think you are supposed to bring your AP test results if you have them …when you register online it tells you how many spaces are open for that session,…there is an orientation website…when I registered the site was having problems, so I called to confirm that I was on the list for that session…there is a contact phone# for orientation if you have any questions

nagah, do you have the url? Or do they inform you of the website once they have confirmed you are enrolling at uva?

really your orientation date doesn’t make too big of a difference in registering for classes because they block out a certain number of spots in popular courses and then open up spots at each orientation. Courses that are notoriously difficult to get are Spanish levels 101-202 (but especially 101 and 102) and other classes like some politics courses.

And even if you don’t get what you want during orientation, so much dropping and switching and adding through ISIS goes on the first two weeks of semester that you can often sneak into a class. And if not, some professors are happy to sign course action forms and overfill their classes. Just be persistant.

k_jo since you mentioned spanish, this is a question that’s kind of off topic, but are engineers required to take language requirements?

I’m not in the e-school so i don’t know exactly what their requirements are, but i do have a copy of the undergrad record on my desk… and as far as I can tell, they dont have language requirements.

maybe there is someone around here in the e-school that knows a little more definitively than I do…
