Rejected from one school at UVA but accepted by another?

Just wondering if any students here have ever been rejected from their original school they applied to at UVA but have been accepted to their second choice school at UVA?
For example, I applied to the School of Nursing, but wrote on my application that I would like to be considered for the College of Arts & Sciences. How likely is this to happen? And how often does it happen? Are you lucky if you get considered to your 2nd choice school?!

i think you can only apply to one school, if you told them you’d like to be considered for another school than they probably switched your application from your previous school to the new one, you can’t apply to more than one school

true, you CAN’T apply to more than one school and have your pick of either one. however, you CAN apply to one school and ask to be considered for another if you aren’t admitted to the first, and i think that’s what uvafan is talking about. others have mentioned that they spoke with admission counselors and were told to do exactly what uvafan did; write a note on their application asking to be considered for another school if they aren’t accepted to their first pick.

i feel like if someone is grossly unqualified, they wouldn’t get in to either. however, if someone is applying to an extremely competitive school, such as Architecture, Commerce, or to a certain extent Nursing, and they don’t make the cut, it’s very possible they’d still be an excellent candidate for Arts & Sciences.

i feel like this is the most logical explanation, but it’s equally likely that i’m very wrong.

If you are denied, you cannot ask for reconsideration for admission to a different school.

Admitted students can write a letter to the Dean asking to be switched to a different school. We have had a few students already ask to move from Arts & Sciences to Engineering this year. I think one asked to move from Engineering to Arts & Sciences so a pure science major could be pursued.

right, i think we’re saying the same thing Dean J…you can’t ask to be reconsidered for another school AFTER you get denied…and you also can’t ask to be considered for admission to multiple schools.

several people on the forums have mentioned that they made a note on their actual applications requesting the following: if they aren’t offered admission to the school indicated on their application, say engineering, they’d like to be considered for arts & sciences, or another less-competitive school than the one they indicated. it sounded as if they had cleared with someone, but i may be wrong about that.

am i misinformed?

Applicants apply to one school. They can’t request a back up.

There have been a few cases in the past where an accomplished transfer wasn’t offered admission to McIntire and we offered a spot in Arts & Sciences, but students can’t request that.

oh, okay. i know a few people had talked about applying to the school of nursing and listing arts and sciences as their backup. thanks so much for clearing this up!

So Dean J,
Only admissions is the one who makes the decision of who will get considered for admissions to another school if they request this on their application, in my case CLASu
