I knew it!!! The thermostat does more to affect your admissions than any insightful personal interest or achievements… This article should be featured on the main page!

Makes all those people who stress over one B look very, very stupid…

“After the letters came out, one father called me to complain his son hadn’t gotten in. He said he was an advisor on several TV shows and movies. So I asked him which ones, and he told me the show 90210. Well, that was my favorite show, so I asked him to give me some good gossip. Then the next day I got this huge package filled with stuff from the TV show: original scripts, autographs, etc. And I called him up and said, ‘Thanks for the cool package, but there’s still no way your kid is getting into this college.”"

In one sense, that’s comforting, but in another…upsetting. Because it’s kind of like, “Well, it’s not that I wasn’t qualified, it’s that I’m a white girl from the suburbs…but wait, that means I was rejected because I’m a white girl from the suburbs.”

^^yup…and if you’re a “white girl from New Jersey”, as stated in the article, it’s even more difficult…

The greatest line to me from my D1 who is now a college freshman during last year’s college admission process: “Why couldn’t YOU have been born in Brazil?”

I just think it’s unfair that they’d admit/reject you based on whim. If I get admitted, I’m not complaining, but on the other hand… rejected based on a whim? That’s pretty uncool.

I like this article, it’s a pretty good example of how way too many people stress themselves over completely menial things that matter less to their chances than the mood of the admissions agent on the day he looks at your app.

I think the lesson here is to stress less and enjoy the process. I know that it seems so silly and arbitrary (I keep imagining adcoms playing PLINKO with names of applicants on the discs) but, as they say, after filtering out those who aren’t “academically qualified” the process does seem random. It’s out of our hands.

So, as was stated above, please don’t sweat that one B.

that was good, i found the last one especially funny

i think that most of those points are understandable (i don’t mean i like or agree with them, i’m just saying i can see their reasoning). except the food poisoning and steelers game people. they need to be deported haha

This was interesting. It would’ve been funnier if I wasn’t now sitting here praying that the people who read my application don’t order some bad chinese food the night before.
