Repair or replace Bosch DW?

Our now 15 year old Bosch did have a big repair bill somewhere along the way as described by the OP (maybe not quite as big). Got it repaired when it was perhaps 7 years old. Still working well.

you could get the 300 series for ~$800 new+installation. My independent shop charged $50 for install last year.

(Series 300 runs quieter than Series 100, but if its a little used room, you might not care.)

We’ve been hand washing dishes since July. Our Bosch 500 series has been on back order due to covid.
Ordered via Lowes.
Same story at Best Buy and home depot.
DH thinks Im insane not to substitute but Im resolute. Loved our Bosch in our old house. This is our forever fter retirement home and Im not settling.

Has anyone used ABT appliances online?

That’s generally true, but we installed hardwood floors in the kitchen. On slab, so the floor was raised, and while the space under the counter is the same (slab to tile) the appliance entrance is essentially ~1/2" shorter. Not all ‘standard’ DW’s will fit.

So I am local to them plus I had a side company years ago and used them to buy and deliver items out of state for me. They are great. They are one of the largest appliance retailers in the United States and work directly with the manufacturer. When you go there the place is huge and always packed. They carry just about every make and model.

I listed the person I use since she has been there forever and just knows her stuff. They used to have a white glove service for OOS deliveries instate it’s pretty much free delivery

Update
Home Depot (with salesman who has been there forever). A 300 Bosch, with the $150 install, will come to $1059. 500 series costs $1150, but not available. On November 1, Black Friday sales starts. He never suggested other brands.

Fancy independent appliance store. They sell Bosch, GE profile and monogram, etc. Salesman said he doesn’t like Bosch because the hinges break and parts hard to get and now quite $$$. I hadn’t mentioned that my hinges were gone. He thought the best value in store is the Cove, made by Subzero and Miele. Every part is metal. With pocket handle, $880, plus $220 for delivery, which is with their trucks and employees. That is available. He had to check on the one with the European handle. The handle costs more, but it’s where I’m used to hanging dish towels.

Today I’ll go to Lowe’s and explore

ThNks all

We used Abt online when we lived in OH and then in person when we moved to IL. Best prices, amazing customer service. They carry all brands from the cheapest to the most expensive. Very, very knowledgeable sales team. I wouldn’t buy anything without talking to them first.

We have a Bosch fridge as well as dishwasher. The fridge was delivered with a cracked drawer. Abt had the replacement to us the same day. If we were out of state, it would have been overnighted.

I wouldn’t buy another Bosch. We’ve had a lot more luck with dishwashers from Sears!

I’ve had good luck at Lowe’s ‘negotiating’ prices: “is that the best you can do?” Sometimes the salesperson will come back with, 'well we can match Pacific Sales/ABT so I can give you another 10% off."

At Best Buy my sister had them price match and they do. It’s a competitive segment now.

Side note on sizes. MOST dishwashers are 24" wide and fit under most 36" high counters. However, the Bosch is slightly smaller front to back. Our cabinets are custom from the 50’s, and the Bosch fits. Many others are slightly deeper, and would not.

I’m watching with interest. We still have (shhhh) our original 1993 dishwasher from when we built this house.

Over the years I’ve had the repairman here for small stuff about 3 times. Also H repaired the springs last year and while he was at it ordered new silverware basket. It cleans really well (I rarely need to pre-rinse dishes), probably because it predates water saver rules.

We had a Bosch dishwasher that had been repaired and when it needed another repair, we decided to replace. It was the super silent model, which we liked. In any event, ShawWife called the authorized Bosch repair person and asked which model had the least repair problems. He told us it was the simplest model they offered (of the silent variety, though they may now all be silent). He said, the problems are more likely when you have fancy features. So, we spent less and had no problem. My recollection was that the economics were compelling if you went to the lower end of the Bosch line.

Of course, we sold that house and bought another house, which has top of the line everything (Viking commercial stove, extra-large Sub-Zero frig, etc.) included a Bosch DW. On the simpler end, but takes forever to run. We think it is on Eco mode, but need to figure out how to control it. We are doing a kitchen renovation and will keep the appliances but are going to add a second DW. We will likely buy the bottom of the line Bosch.

Our Bosch is simple simple simple. Not sure which model, but I know the one we have isn’t made anymore.

So FYI if it’s the control board, you can take it out yourself with the you tube videos. Send it to Central Core /parts simple… They are the company that repairs these boards for the major companies. My washing machine part was $500. They will repair it for $150… Having the guy come out $65.00 plus $100 labor or something like that. The one for my washing machine took 10 minutes to take out. Of course it was like 3 hours of watching you tube videos till I got to the correct one… ?

We own this Bosch and really like it. I just looked at the prices for the 500 series machines. Yikes! Much more expensive than we’d paid at Lowe’s 3 or 4 years ago. It’s our second Bosch, and after dealing with dying dishwashers, we’d never go back. I would have preferred the regular handle, but it wouldn’t work in our tiny U-shaped kitchen.

I have successfully price matched at Home Depot (for a Best Buy price) for our washer and dryer. I haven’t had to try at Lowe’s yet.

I have heard great things about Abt…

Forget prices, it’s availability that matters. Also, safety. The woman who was burned alive lived 2 blocks from me. The big box stores hire out delivery services. My guy friend said he’d hang out if I’d arrange a Sunday delivery. I feel better paying more for the local appliance store, that uses their own trucks and employees.

This store carries all the Bosch, GEs, Asko, MiELE, Cove, …the latter 2 Are more than I wish to spend.

I feel badly for those, that need an essential appliance.

We just replaced our 8 year old Bosch, which was leaking. Had to buy a new Bosch because we wanted to use the front panel from the old one. Of course, this meant $$$$.

I’ve had several appliance technicians tell me that appliances built after 2010 usually last about 7 years, then aren’t worth repairing.

Yes @Massmomm ! We’ve been in our home 30 years. The later appliances definitely last much less than earlier ones. I’ve also had repair technicians advise us to keep much older appliances since they were built so well.

Oven is original to the house - 64 years old and except for timer is still working fine! We’ve also never replaced because it is built into a masonry wall, and of course new ovens don’t match the size we would need. HWH is about 24 years old and still working. Dryer & A/C maybe 25 years. But items we’ve purchased over the last 10 years are already needing replacement.

We’re in the camp “don’t replace unless it’s broke”. Of course the problem with keeping such old appliances, is they can quit at any time, and quick replacement becomes more critical, without much time to research alternatives.

I also think it smart to purchase the most simple appliances. I never use all the specialty settings anyway, and more to repair.
