Reputation of University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Singapore Campus

Please comment on the rep of the new campus in Singapore. It’s pretty young, so would it carry the image of the main UNLV campus?

If it will, then can anybody comment on the rep of the main school?

just make sure it doesnt turn into a UNSW debacle…courtesy of the wonderful Aus higher ed system

sorry if I sound ignorant, lOngbOWmeN, but what does UNLV and UNLV SG have anything to do with UNSW and any other thing Aussie?

np heres some background info…the alternative higher education sector in SG (foreign unis, private schools etc.) has been plagued with problems, lots of schools of dubious quality, half-hearted tie-ups, sudden closures

the UNSW debacle was an incident in which the UNSW abruptly closed and withdrew its satellite campus in SG after a single semester, after investing like 20mil or sth, and leaving hundreds of students stranded

not discouraging you or anything, just be more discerning when it comes to these fishy things

UNLV has been in Singapore for a couple of years, and I haven’t heard any complaints about its administration/academics. Its set-up is on a much smaller scale than UNSW so I think it is quite a unfair comparison. UNSW was aiming for something too big and too risky. imho, UNLV has a pretty good reputation in SG and it is worth the investment if you can afford the school fees.

hmm i wasnt comparing UNLV with UNSW, just trying to warn the OP bout the fishy dealings of foreign/private schools here in SG

no complaints against UNLV have “surfaced” at the moment, but that could oso be due to the overall lack of publicity of UNLV here in SG (nvr heard of it)

if you can afford the school fees (private schools are normally very ex), it would probably be more prudent to spend it on a more established school in SG or overseas

no complaints against UNLV have “surfaced” at the moment, but that could oso be due to the overall lack of publicity of UNLV here in SG (nvr heard of it)

^ errr

OP, as a relatively knowledgable and well-read SGer, i’ll just like to tell you i havent heard of UNLV (not to mention the SG campus), so take reasonable care in choosing because the private education scene in SG is really really plagued with problems from the news reports that are surfacing over here

Ok, if UNLV SG campus really is that bad, and you really are that well read, what in your opinion are the schools that Singaporean employers look at for tourism grads? The NTU tourism major is still new and untested and it doesn’t have the backing of bigger name college that has more experience in this field.

In the region, there just ain’t that many options for people who want to major in this area. Do keep in mind that not everybody has the ability to afford an education in US/UK/Australia itself and not everybody wants to do a general business degree (while I don’t agree with such a choice, I respect personal preferences).

All I’m trying to say is that among Singaporean employers, UNLV SG campus is pretty well respected. I won’t be so quick to guarantee that you’ll have the same luck overseas, since my experience with overseas employers are limited. But if you’re other options are the like of MDIS, SIM, etc, I think UNLV is a pretty good bet.

If you have heard other opinions beyond your own, maybe you can share it with us.

Sorry for the grammatical mistakes in my above post… not feeling my best today. Cheers.

yeah actually a day after my above post i read bout UNLV-SG in papers haha

i personally feel that SG employers do harbour some misgivings wrt degrees from external or satellite campuses, simply because they are often perceived to be cash cows for the parent campus, notwithstanding the fact that they offer less comprehensive U experiences and less rigorous academic programs

further more, foreign universities are generally more exp, so i was thinking if someone could afford it, he would probably do better in a comprehensive uni either in SG or Aus

but well i’m not exactly in a position to pass judgement or anything, so i’ll just recommend OP to take into consideration all the factors (prestige, academic rigour, overall experience etc.) when making such decisions
