Research Science Institute (RSI) 2010

I don’t think so; you need an official score report which takes a whole month to be mailed to your home after the test. I just got back my DEC 2009 SAT II official score report, on time for mailing. Anything later than that won’t even be remotely close to soon enough for sending to RSI. (They don’t even have a procedure for sending score updates, AFAIK.)

One interesting thing about the Math SAT II tests: back when I took my first round of SAT IIs, I opted for Chem-Math I-Math II. I got 800s on all of them but the percentile range CollegeBoard gave is really weird:

-Math I is listed as 99th percentile.
-Math II is listed as 90th percentile.
-Chem is listed as 94th.

How does this even work? Does it mean 10% of the entire test-taking population got 800s on Math II and only 1% got 800s on Math I? I thought Math I was easier…

Being the total nervous wreck I am this week…I looked into last year’s thread and they said that RSI will accept photocopies of the scores until an official score report is available.

I’m talking about how the actual “score report” doesn’t get mailed home until a month after the test. The online “score reports” on CollegeBoard have giant watermarks stretched across the page saying “THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL SCORE REPORT” and disclaimers are placed everywhere saying online score reports aren’t “official”, because you can just change them with photoshop or this javascript:

javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true';%20document.designMode='on';%20void%200

The SATs are on a curve. If you look at the percentile list for the SATs you will see that 99 and 99+ have same score… I think Chem ranges 96 to 99+ for an 800.

Yeah…well. I don’t really have any other option. Anyway…if they like whatever stats they see and want to follow up, then I’ll send them the scores. Besides, if you can change the scores using Java, I’m sure you can change the watermark using Java…so with that logic, if you wanted to send messed up score reports anyway, you would remove the “This is not an official score report” thing. I’ll just follow up an official score report later…or I’ll give them the password to my collegeboard thing…idk. I want/need that 800 in my record…provided I don’t make idiotic careless mistakes. Ugh.

btw, that was Math I, I was talking about with half an hour to go after checking over like three times. How’s Math II? I read the overview, sounds easy, but I haven’t taken the practice test…

Personally, I found Math II easy, but I’m primarily a maths student so I really can’t evaluate you. Math II is Math I with n00b trig added, essentially. I wouldn’t fret over it, just don’t make stupid mistakes (one question wrong can cost you the 800 in Math II, I heard, while the Physics SAT II curve this year was something like 16 questions wrong or less = 800. But don’t quote me on that. )

hmm…the higher percentile on the Math I actually makes sense if you think about it.

Math I sounds and is easy…and everyone whose not going into liberal arts or something takes it pretty much. Math II isn’t the AP Calc test…but it sounds more advanced and intimidating than Math I so obviously people with a much higher level of interest in math would take Math II. Furthermore, people who take Math II have already typically taken Math I. You see there’s a bigger and less apt pool of test takers in Math I than in Math II…so naturally you have more competition in Math II.

this is incorrect. i had an hour long discussion with the RSI lady and she told me at least 5 times to not waste my money on an official score report, and to just print out the one online. she basically said they honestly dgaf about scores

frankly from what ive been told over and over again, RSI really doesent care about test scores. just research and science/math competitions. stuff like ISEF and USA_O qualifications, etc. really really stand out

app mailed…

im from cali, and if i send my app on wed, should i send it through priority or 1 day? and fedex or usps

so what is the projected time it takes to read apps, also who exactly reads/evaluates them

Hey, folks who will be sending in their applications today or tomorrow! You might want to make sure that you did NOT staple or fold your application in any way what-so-ever. Apparently on the first page it says that they won’t even CONSIDER your application if it has been folded or stapled. So don’t do it!

kbbm24…check out the US Postal Service website. I’m from PA and it takes 2 days. I think 2-3 days is standard for any place in the country…if you’re sending it via First Class.

A “comprehensive read” for a given graduate school app typically takes somewhere from 1-2 minutes. I have no idea how much attention is given to RSI apps; ask around the RSI forum.

They may have multiple people reading each app though, so the minutes quickly add up.

just curious, how much would participating in a collegiate level research project(bio) and then presenting the results at the state academy of science annual meeting with other college students help?

Quite a bit, actually. It’ll be even more impressive if it’s easily found on a quick search and is cited by the popular press.

(Look, for people asking about USPS times, I already posted them [on my blog in giant highlighted font](How NOT to do your RSI application | The Uninteresting Chronicles of a High School Student). Just like, click it or something. Basically a HowTo: RSI in a page.)

Lol…aristocrat, you are awesome…obviously very qualified… but that math fail is too funny. Hahhahahaa. I’m laughing too much to be reasonable. Okay.

LOL do they really look up your name

Woohoo finally done! Should we include citations in our essays? Also, RSI allows score choice for SAT II’s, right?

mailed my app…i hate myself because my gpa sucks. the worst grades are math and sci (A-) ***.
