Research Science Institute (RSI) 2010

accepted from New Jersey!!!

this is incredible…I keep rereading the letter, thinking its a dream

Tsubomi, can I get an anonymised copy of your acceptance letter? I want to know what one looks like :P.

The [rejection form](RSI Rejection Letter | The Uninteresting Chronicles of a High School Student) is brief and rather generalized, lol. While it was quite disappointing, I can’t say I didn’t expect it. I literally drafted my application in under 8 hours a mere week prior to the deadline, and in retrospect it is a terribly horrid idea. I just need to remember not to do the same thing for my college applications and I should be okay.

Rejected! I’m glad that’s over.

@tsubomi1993 - I guess you were the lucky New Jerseyan who got in! Congrats, I really think you deserved it, given your accomplishments. :)

congratulations tsubomi! i always thought you would get in :)

I was rejected. I am actually a little bit surprised about this. I am from an easier west coast state, and I have been doing some phenomenal research at the university.

My stats were:
GPA: 4.0
Rank: 1
PSAT: 80M 80W 75CR
Math 2: 780
AP Calculus BC: 5
AP Computer Science A: 5

1st place and grand prize at the state fair, 7 sponsor awards. ISEF 4th place internationally.

I thought for sure the ISEF would help me a lot. Even so, I put forth so much passion in my essays, and the research group I’ve bene working in tells me that my research is at the PhD level. I got amazing recs from them, and I honestly have so much research experience that I thought it would help me somewhat. I even took multiple 200 level and above college courses at the university in computer science, and math.

I know RSI is a long shot, but nobody in my state attended ISEF or USAMO, so I really don’t know who got the spot. I know all the previous years RSI acceptees and the truth is they all told me I was much better than them when they applied. My own sister got alternate when she applied, and told me I would get at least alternate since I have done so much more in science and research, etc. Everyone is dumbfounded. I can’t say I expected to be accepted, but I thought I would at least get alternate. I hope I am not coming accross arrogant, it’s just that my research was very strong and I can’t think of any big holes I had. None of the other ISEF kids from my state applied.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the fact that I am indian male. Perhaps I got screwed by affirmative action. I want to know who got in over me, assuming they took one from my state. I am very upset and disallusioned.

Is it weird that I hung my letter of rejection on my door?

Okay -

Dear ________:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees for the Center for Excellence in Education, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the twenty-seventh annual Research Science Institute (RSI) held in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You are among 45 U.S. students chosen to attend our program for top math and science students. Approximately thirty students from other nations will also attend.

Please send us a letter of acceptance to the RSI no later than March 16, 2010. RSI 2010 will take place at MIT from June 20 to July 31, 2010. You should plan to arrive at MIT on Sunday, June 20 and depart on Saturday, July 31, 2010. More program details will follow upon our receipt of your acceptance.

Congratulations! We look forward to having you with us.

Sincerely,
Joann P. DiGennaro
President

seriously, I’m not accomplished. I’ve never even taken the AMC and I applied with a primary interest in math/physics. I didn’t even list or try to sneak in any accomplishments or awards in my essays. I’ll write a post on what I think were the strong points of my application later, but for future applicants, just be yourself :]

Now there, CC is not a place to be modest XD. But thanks for the transcription!

Sigh… I couldn’t even apply.

what! only 45 students from the US, is that fewer than usual? it seems dumb to have so many international kids-i mean I understand that its cool to do so, but it just seems like they should encourage more kids in the US, who will ultimately be conducting research at US based universities, to apply

@enigma: RSI doesn’t take a guy from every state. There are 45 spots, and stronger states send multiple people (my state averages 2).

Messiah and others, I noticed you guys also did not get your letter yet. Should we be waiting for them tomorrow? or does that mean we were rejected?

Hurray, West Virginia has one person. That’s above average.

bks: People were already rejected, so I’d guess that whenever you get your letter (assuming before March 16th) it’ll still be possible for a yes.

By the way, congratulations to everyone who did make it. Do a little extra research for the rest of us :D

no, clearly not, since people got rejection/acceptance letters at the same time so they probably sent them out at the same time-its probably the usps fault-always blame them haha

My letter was stamped 4 March so most letters have been mailed out by now ostensibly. It’s the postal service’s fault as always.

Mine’s stamped March 5th

Accepted from Hawaii :D

^gr, I wish I lived in Hawaii. Where I live, there are days where the moisture in your nose will freeze upon going outside, and when you blink your eyes get frozen shut. (not alaska though, thank god)

^It’s a trade off

Especially where I live, there’s pretty much nothing to do… especially if you don’t own a car. It is beautiful though :)

@mt1993: i know exactly what you’re talking about!!! those 30 seconds were so painful
“Actually the worst part was that I had put too much stock in CC and that acceptances were coming a few days before rejections, so when I saw the envelope I thought I had gotten in. It was those 30 seconds of actual hope that made it all the more painful.”
