Don’t worry, I am aware as to what the residential college system is and all. I just got my college in the mail today (McMurtry), and I was just wondering about its personality and the personality of the other colleges. I know that it’s super new and nice and all (hooray!) but what is it like?

I tried looking it up, but it’s fairly hard to google the vibe of a place. Can any current students help me out?

Yeah, I just got my college assignment too (Baker), and I know it’s not one of the new ones, but does that mean that the rooms/whatever are old and inferior to those of the other colleges? I’m not really sure what the differences between them are in that respect.

Hahahaha. The first two paragraphs of the Lovett article pretty much sum up my feelings about Lovett. I was not pleased with Lovett when I stayed there, but I’ll get over it. I think we’re getting a Hall from Baker though.

Fromen, welcome to Lovett!. I just graduated in May, so maybe I’ll meet you at Beer-Bike or something. I honestly don’t think the rooms are that bad — the reduced amount of natural light hurts everyone’s perception. You never have to live with communal bathrooms, and it doesn’t smell weird like some buildings. I lived in Jones North one summer, and it always smelled like curry. It still does.

We are indeed inheriting a Baker wing, but only upperclassmen are living there. The bathrooms aren’t as good as they are in the toaster, but you get nice, big common rooms.

Anyway, congrats on being in the best college, and best of luck to you.

Welcome to McMurtry! I’m an advisor there for O-Week! If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from your advisors yet, it’s because we don’t find out who our new students are untill Friday. But, rest assured, you will be definitely hearing from your advisors soon. We’re crazy-excited to meet you and give you an awesome experience.

That said, I’m sure you will hear a lot about the “good” colleges or the “bad” colleges. Let me just say–by roughly day 2 of O-Week, you will be 100% convinced that McMurtry is the best. This is natural and every new student will feel that their college is the best. I’m actually from another college (I’m co-advising at McMurtry) and I can tell you that the McM coordinators are wonderful…the fact that McM is so new means that there’s a ton of energy and enthusiasm among everyone who’s building the traditions. Just because there aren’t years and years of McM history doesn’t mean y’all are any worse than any of the other colleges. In fact, McM and Duncan freshman are famous for being really involved in the workings of their college.

The Rice Standard articles are great viewpoints of the residential colleges. Though the colleges do have their personalities, it’s true that for the most part, your experience at any college will be what you make of it. There are so many people in each college that it’s definitely not like every person at x college will act x, and every person at y college will act y. Whatever you’re into, you will find someone else into the same things.

Finally, be on the lookout for your O-Week book! It will come in the mail pretty soon, along with your rooming and O-Week group assignments. The book does a great job of conveying the vibe of McM, and all of us (advisors, coordinators, etc.) wrote articles about the various aspects of life at McM and Rice. If you don’t want to wait for your paper copy, you can check it out at http://mcmurtry.rice.edu/oweek/2010/RonaldO-week.pdf

Have a wonderful rest of the summer, and can’t wait to meet you!

Im in Mcmurtry too!All I know is that we have an awesome mascot(a dog named Bear) and a cool conch shell. I can’t wait!

I stayed in Lovett during my visit and during Vision and I liked the college as a group but the rooms were not as nice as others I saw but its definitely not something that bothered me.

Yay McMurtry! The closer we get to O-Week, the happier I am that I picked Rice! Thank you all for your wonderful responses, especially dadadoom for all of those articles. You guys make me want to fill the world with exclamation points!

Haha I’m from Lovett and I hosted during Owl Days too. Congrats on receiving your college assignments, and welcome to Lovett!!! Look forward to O-week, it will be fantastic!! (or so I hear) Only another month or so, yay!
