Residential college personalities

Can’t give a female perspective, but I can give a Lovett perspective.

Compared to most of the campus, the rooms are bad. We do, however, have some of the best bathrooms on campus (second probably only to Martel, maybe Wiess), and you never have to have a hallway bathroom in any of your four years. The rooms are big-but-not-huge — 13x15 — but there are no common rooms (except in the new Baker wing, but that doesn’t really matter since only upperclassmen live there). We have the most utilitarian (in a good way) commons of any college. You will always find people there, watching TV, playing pool, playing video games, studying, or just hanging out. That’s my favorite part of Lovett — if you don’t know what’s going on, you can just head down to the commons instead of calling friends or wandering up and down hallways.

My roommate and I junior year split the 1.5 closets by each of us taking a bar in the half closet and then each taking half of the bar in the full closet. We are not females, but we did have a lot of clothes for two straight men living together. We made it work. There’s also a pipe running across the room for the sprinkler system. Technically you’re not allowed to hang anything on it, but a lot of people use it for surplus clothes-hanging.

I personally think the building is pretty — I love brutalism surrounded by vegetation — but most people seem to disagree. Look at this photo, though, and try to tell me Lovett is ugly: http://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/30726203@N02/4470665185/sizes/l/

Thx for the info. The lack of light is the biggest negative for me. I like the brick walls (much better than concrete block) and sort of mid-century modern vibe of the rooms though. And the exterior really isn’t that bad. Whether you like it or hate it, it does have a certain…style. I saw a lot of 60’s era dorms at other schools that are much, much worse, completely lacking in character. Lovett has character, its just a poor design as far as livability goes.

NYSkins - that picture is why people believe the rumor that Lovett was built for testing of the Manhattan Project

Wow! I just looked at the picture posted by NYSkins1. Lovett is a beautiful building lit up at night. Thanks.

It may not be ugly, but it’s sure not pretty. Oh Lovett, when will you guys catch a break?

when they knock it down. I pushed for that last year. We considered it for a while, but the demolition costs are way too high

Yeah, I’ve heard all about that one. Seems like kind of an absurd situation.

I dunno, I think if they build a new wing of Lovett that’s on par with new Brown Lovett wouldn’t get such a bad rap. Brown tower is definitely worse than Lovett, but because there’s hope of moving on to greener pastures, nobody really cares.

was considered as well, but giving lovett the baker wing somehow ended up happening.

It was a budget thing. I think what’s going to happen is that the Baker wing is going to be knocked down 10–15 years from now, and a new Lovett wing is going to go in there.

@Antarius: Think of the thing you love most in the world, then cover it in concrete riot grating. You still love it, no? :)

That’s very true. Brown tower is a terrible, terrible place.

DD lived at Lovett - and it wasn’t bad at all. It has a really nice green area outside to hang out in, and when she lived there, had really great College Master. (I don’t know anything about the new one - probably is good, too.) The bit about not being in your room much will probably be true; most of your living happens outside your room. The rooms are a decent size and solid, so sound infiltration is less of a problem. The concrete lattice-work filters out some of the brutally hot sun - so it’s good in some ways! Don’t despair if you are in a res college where the rooms aren’t as “nice”. It won’t ruin your college experience! ;)

Want to have a feeling for what the furniture lloks like and how the room can be arranged.

look at the mcmurtry floorplan
Ceiling and floor are concrete. The walls are cinderblock

It looks like a holding cell

^ I did a google search on McMurtry and saw some pictures on Facebook (after your message was received) and have a much better idea now about what the room is like. How are the pictures being hung?
Are there hooks, counters, storage in the bathroom? Use the shelf that hangs from the showerhead?

Thanks.

I don’t really understand why lovett gets all the **** it does, it doesn’t seem that bad. Throws some damn good parties in my experience too. What I really don’t understand is the toaster comparison… I mean the building looks absolutely nothing like any toaster I’ve ever seen.

Proudparents- there are two counters near the sink in the bathroom (one per person), two towel racks, and two smaller counters in the shower (like for soap and shampoo, etc.). As for pictures and such, to be honest neither my roommate nor myself hung any pictures, but my guess would be some kind of hooks or sticky tack or something (someone can correct me if that’s wrong.) Also does anyone know if the rooms in the newer buildings are all being built like Mcm/Duncan? Specifically are they all concrete again?

yes. they are exactly like mcm/ dun. Same bathrooms too

And phade - it looks like a radiator, not a toaster
