Residential college personalities

Parties? Will Rice?

it my idea of a joke :D

^ huh? [10char]

Don’t worry about it, RaeBanging. You’ll have plenty of time to form opinions about the colleges once you’re at Rice.

and you will reach the same consensus as everyone else ;)

hey will rice’s public parties might suck, but there’s still partying happening on weekends. maybe not to sid or lovett levels, but it’s still fun

Which Will Rice public parties? You mean the one that they have hosted ever?

they hosted ONE. Although that probably was mcMurtry driven, so Im all for writing it off…

They have never hosted any parties. Consensus?

No, Will Rice’s public party last year was decidedly Will Rice-initiated. It was spearheaded by a handful of juniors and seniors who were tired of Will Rice not having a public party. They were met with a lot of resistance, but they pulled off a halfway-decent party. I’m proud of them.

Now let’s just see if they can do it again now that the leaders have graduated.

but since it was at mcm we can give them some credit. This can be like the Frank lampard goal-not goal. He still hasnt “scored” in the world cup.

I like the “what party” response better

haters gonna hate

we judge you too ;)

There are impressionable frosh on here so I won’t bash any colleges but I will say that I was extremely impressed by how good mardigras was after how badly ice age sucked (easily worst party of the year imo, even worse than b blues). Also, some of the bigger name parties (80’s NOD euro etc) were kind of over rated and some of the parties that were not as hyped were actually a lot more fun/crazier for me and my friends. So if you’re a freshman and you’re into the party thing don’t let the upperclassmen bias you to much just go and have a good time. (Obviously)

definitely, all joking aside good times happen at every college. you might not enjoy each public party but in the end on an average weekend there is quite a bit of partying going on if that’s your thing, and if not, don’t worry because there are plenty of non-partiers as well.

^^ i agree

phade- the res. college system is all fun and games. It not really meant to be taken seriously. You kind of bash them like you bash your sport team rivals or something

Lol I go to rice I know exactly how the colleges work. I’m just saying that I definitely think some colleges are worse than others (in some cases ALOT) but I’m not going to say which ones or why on this board because I don’t want to poison the well for incoming students.

This is my first post on CC so I apologize in advance for any mistakes! I have enjoyed viewing the Rice threads for several months as a guest and wanted to ask a few questions. My daughter is a high school senior and loves Rice. I have read the articles in the Rice Standard about the different personalities of the residence colleges. It seems that each is very unique. Were any of you concerned about being matched with the “right” college?

I can answer for my son. He was so busy with other things - like getting into college, choosing the right college, hs graduation, etc - that I don’t think he spent even a minute learning the names of the colleges or the differences between them. As soon as he found out he would be going to Brown we read up on it and decided that Brown is definitely the best college at Rice.

GL to your daughter.

As a freshamn closing up O-Week I can say that no matter what college you get into, you will think that you are in the best college(which we all know is McMurtry :P) and that one will find friends no matter what college you are placed into. I can say with one day left in O-Week that this was the best week of my entire life and that I KNOW for a fact that Rice is the perfect college for me so PLEASE apply for Rice is a really amazing place to be with even more amazing people.

All colleges are the same. They have some very small superficial differences (such as what color you wear and what your cheer is). The underlying student body is the same. All colleges have the same number (with statistical variance) of athletes, engineers and academs. They are pretty well split racially as well. International students and exchange students are spread out as well.

The Rice Standard article focuses on this “culture” thing that really pertains to college specific events and more in your former years of college. As juniors and seniors you have a lot of friends in other colleges and hang out all over Rice.

Regardless of what your daughter’s personality is like, she will fit in to one of the 11 residential colleges. If ALL goes south, and she hates it - you can easily transfer to another college. Some people make a ton of friends at one college and not many at their “home” college and thus transfer to be with their friends.

phade - they are all pretty similar. The quality of facilities varies significantly though
