Residential college personalities

Thanks very much for your responses. It was mentioned that the quality of the facilities vary. Do you think that variety has an impact on how much a student enjoys their Rice experience or is it more about the friends you make in your residence college? Also, it sounds like Rice is doing a lot of construction. Are there plans to update the colleges that may need it?

the colleges are

Martel (new building - 7 years old ish)

Wiess (new building - 8 years old)

McMurtry (brand new)

Duncan (brand new)

WRC (one brand new wing)

Baker (one brand new wing)

Brown (one new wing. the old one SUCKS)

Jones (some new rooms. Old ones suck)

Hanszen (old. rooms a not very good)

Sid Rich - building is like 35 years old. Rooms arent too good. All doubles. Good for parties though

Lovett - hands down the worst facilities. Only good during hurricanes. They also now have the old dumpy wing of baker as well.

Basically, you have a decent shot of being in a good room. The college somehow does well regardless of the rooms. Lovett for example is very social since their rooms are terrible. You see more people downstairs and in the commons.

Wiess on the other hand, has a terrible commons and a dramatic failure in design of common spaces. As a result, more people are in their rooms, other peoples rooms or hanging out in suites.

It will work somehow. dont worry

It’s not that bad. The building is unattractive, but the rooms in the old wing are huge with one solid wall of windows. Compared to a lot of rooms I saw on college tours, Brown’s tower rooms are better. The lobbies and hallways are ugly, though - I’ve gotta admit.

my perspective is more from the side of working with the Housing Department. I havent ever lived in brown. The building is falling apart though.

I will agree that the rooms are larger and spacious. (and Brown >>> Jones anyday ;))
Hanszen has these tiny tiny tiny bedrooms

I’m in old dorm at Will Rice and I love it even though the communal bathrooms are a bit of a pain - there are a LOT of HUGE dorm rooms in this building, and I’m not just trying to be euphemistic when I say that the building has a LOT of character since it’s been around for so long. Will Rice is amazing. All the colleges are amazing - they all create that awesome sense of community wherein people love their own home.
