resume, what are my chances for BS/MD (particularily for brown, uconn, and tufts)

ok so here are my stats:

gender: male
race: indian sub continent
school: private

GPA: 4.06 (our school doesnt report GPA as weighted or unweighted)

ACT: 32 (34 math, 32, science, 31 english, 30 reading)

9th (all honors classes): world history I (A-), geometry (A), biology (A-), spanish 2 (B), freshmen english (A) (i forgot what the course was called)

10th (all honors classes): world history 2 (b+), algebra 2 (a or a- i forget), chemistry (a), spanish 3 (b or b+ i forget), sophmore english (a or a-)

11th: AP US (B), honors pre-cal (A), honors physics (A), english (B+), AP Micro (B-, really bad yeh), AP Macro (B+)

ECs: Lacrosse (all throughout high school), jazz/rock band (all throughout high school), Model UN (10th, 11th, and possibly 12th), United Cultures Club (10th, 11th, 12th - vice president), music interpretation club (my friends and I started it 11th grade), volunteer at local hospital, took a summer @ brown course (intro to medicine)

i think i might have left a lot of stuff out but its all i can think of off the top of my head, but im so focused on going into a bs/md program, id assume the summer course at brown might help my chances for brown, and the in-state thing might help for uconn but i need like people’s opinions, thank you

Your GPA and scores put you a little behind the competition…and as I have stated numerous times, being an Indian Male is horrible for medical admissions (super over-represented minority). However, if you make it past the initial GPA/SAT score cut, make sure you do well at the interviews and show good character and dedication.

do uconn and tufts have BS/MD programs . . . if so I’ve never heard of them, only Brown.

why would my gpa put me behind, my school reports my GPA out of 4, so its above 4

just wodering

i’ve never heard of a school report a gpa that’s higher than its maximum limit. but anyway, i think that a 4.06 must be weighted since it is above a 4 and you didn’t get straight a’s. don’t know how much this helped but that’s my take on it. usually schools report the weighted and unweighted. the UW is usually out of 4 and the weighted depends on the types of classes…you might want to ask a counselor about this.

i know my gpa is weighted, however my school does not report the score to colleges as UW or W, just the GPA, just because like each school has a different way of boosting the GPA

eh to give you the honest truth, you’re application is lacking all around. Your scores aren’t that great (ACT is ok but the SAT verbal is not looking good), gpa is blah (most of med program kids have straight A’s) and your ecs are not anything too great (although if you were very committed make sure you write about it). I would say you have a slim chance at any at this point unless you drastically improve your SAT and ACT scores. Also you are competing with other indians who make up 90-95% of the applicants and rest assured, most of them have polished apps. In any case, good luck with your college plans.

FoodisGood, where all did you apply and where did you get in?

hmm, that might be a disadvantage if they just report a number because then the reader doesn’t know what that number is out of, or what the unweighted grade is . . . it makes it seem suspicious even though it’s not meant to be.

if your school doesn’t report gpa as W or UW, and since your gpa is above 4, anyone would assume your school has weighted grades. However, if your gpa was 3.954949856, it would be good UW but obviously not if W. Your scores have to at least be up to par or above since your EC’s aren’t shining. Just remember that some Indian males or anyone for that matter will have 2300+ SAT and national medals in research, debate, etc. If you get to the interview, I’m sure you can do well if you’re committed

I think I posted it on a past thread.

jesus christ. wow my chances are so little. do I at least have a chance at regular Brown?

Also, what if I applied to Brown PLME ED? Or just Brown ED? Will that help me i anyway.

I also left out that I was CPR Certified, and I heard that helps your transcript. And dont forget I still have two more SAT IIs to take and I might re-take the ACT.

Yeah, I second that question…how much does CPR certification count?

Apply to Brown reg. Seriously, you’re not a TERRIBLE applicant, ,it’s just the calibar of the programs.

Foodisgood, is there a way I can PM you? CC says your inbox is full. Perhaps email or something? I have a question, but I’d rather not post publicly.

well lets see, i was accepted into the brown plme program 2 years ago, as well as for a regular biology major, but i turned it down for penn state (got a full ride). I can sympathize because I too am an indian male.

as far as your test scores are concerned, they only look at your first sitting so your SAT score is out of the question. Your ACT score, although it is in a high percentage, will more than unlikely make the cut. From what you list as your ecs, it seems that you lack a lot of health related activites. As far as admission into brown as a regular student, your chances seem slim. If you were a minority, however, those stats would make you a “shoe in”. All in all, I highly recommend taking the traditional path to med school (4+4), because you’re only young once, and how often do you get to go through the true college lifestyle? To be quite honest, I doubt tufts will work out in your favour as well…they’re becoming sticklers when it comes to admission. For instance the valedictorian from my class was rejected when she had a composite score of a 1550, and she’s also indian. Might I suggest NYU or BU as schools within your score range? They also serve as great preparation schools (from an undergrad level) for medical school.

GO PSU!!

:O you must’ve had darn good stats. did you get into PSU’s BS/MD program or just PSU?

hah, thanks

yes, i was accepted at the following unis:

cornell, tufts, psu, brown, columbia, and uc berkley

i chose psu because of the full ride, and because i want to go to med school the traditional way…and yes, i was accepted into the 6 year program but i refused.

I did this mainly because it doesn’t make sense to go to an elite school, work my butt off and only receive a 3.6-3.7, while i can go to a state school and receive a much higher gpa. After all, for med. school, its not how you get your under grad. gpa, its how you received it in the first place. The med. schools boards could care less about which undergrad unis you attend.

edit: it doesn’t matter how you receive your gpa, its just the fact that you have it, and thats all that med schools care about

haha sorry about that, sounded a bit on the redundant side.

and for the record, tufts doesn’t have a bs/md program

they do, except u apply for it sophmore yr of tufts

well i thought you were talking about a direct program out of high school, and tufts really isn’t worth it
