Rhp 2010

Did anyone else decide to apply to RHP this year?

I did also; I’m from Northern California… I am curious about where other people applied from for the program.

Yay someone else is doing RHP! I’m originally from Northern CA too, Palo Alto! I moved to Maryland before high school started, returned to California for sophmore year, and now I’m back in Maryland.

Did you pick a major when you applied?

whats rhp??

It’s a program that allows high school juniors to skip their senior year and begin USC a year early.

I applied for biology as a major; I also applied for USC’s Bac/MD program. Did you apply for any major?

I applied for Business Administration. I really want to do their Cinematic Arts joint degree program. How do you feel about your chances of getting in? I’m a little worried myself.

Anyone else who applied for RHP besides the two of us?

good luck guys!
I’m was a RHP student. :)

Hey! This thread hasn’t been active for awhile, but I also applied to RHP (Engineering). I’m from the good old Midwest. Do you guys know when we will find out about whether we’ve gotten in? I’m so nervous about it!

Hey! Good to know there’s a good three people applying here haha.
Do you guys want to share about what you wrote on your RHP application? I don’t remember much but I wrote that my favorite book I read last year was Brave New World.

I think we find out in March. I’m super nervous too, I really want to get in but it’s not looking so bright !

I know I said my favorite book was Anna Karenina… or Ella Enchanted? haha they’re veryyy different books. And didn’t we have to say our favorite fictional character or something? Mine was Hermione :)

Other than that, that’s all I can remember… but I literally wrote my essay in the last two hours before the deadline, so it is definitely not my best work.

But right now I am SO mad, because today I found out that if I get into RHP and decide to go, my high school won’t give me a diploma. Which is really awful. Hopefully if I do get in, I can appeal the board again, because I’d really want a diploma… :(

Ohh for the one on the undergraduate application, I put Sense and Sensibility. I put my favorite movie as Love Actually =). Yeah and I put Spock down as my favorite fictional character. Yay for Hermione =)
Same with the essay =/. Well I wrote it a few days before but I felt like it definitely did not reflect my best work.

My high school is willing to give me a diploma if I take a 3 month English 12 course with a bunch of people who failed it the first time around…
Anyway if you get in, it really doesn’t matter if you have w high school diploma or not because you would be getting a four year college degree anyway. It would be pretty easy for you to get a GED or something.

That’s true about the getting a college diploma thing, but that would mean that I wouldn’t have any degree when applying for jobs for the whole four years. And I probably would get a GED, but I still wish I could graduate from my high school since all of my sisters went there and its just a matter of pride, you know?

You could always explain to employers about the whole RHP situation, but yeah I deefinitely identify with the matter of pride. I don’t have a very strong relationship with my current school in Maryland, but if I had a chance, I would definitely get a degree from my previous school in Palo Alto just because I love it so much and a lot of my family and friends all graduated from there.

Was your school adamant about not being able to get a diploma? I know some people who have negotiated and returned for summer school after a year at USC, etc.

Yes my school was very adamant about it–its a very traditional all-girls school, and we have this awful new principal. Also, since its a relatively small school, there aren’t any summer school classes I could take that would count for credit. The worst part is, my parents were already skeptical of me potentially going to college early (and so far away from where we live), and me not getting a diploma makes them even more reluctant.

But I really do want to go to USC so bad!

I’m in the same position of not being able to get a diploma from my high school- I go to a private Catholic high school, and I am required to take religion and other classes to fulfill the senior requirement along with actually attending the school senior year. However, I don’t think I would try to get a GED because as it was stated earlier, employers would probably understand the situation.

Are your parents okay with it? I’m hoping mine might be more open to the no-diploma thing if I’ve actually gotten into RHP, you know?

So guys, what do you think your chances are? I don’t have the most perfect numbers or anything, but I’m really hoping I get in. Nothing sounds more perfect than attending USC next year. I applied Engineering as well. Where’s everyone from? I’m from right here in Southern Cal. My friend that applied and got in last year loves it.

RHP-USC: If you want a great education you are in the right place. Best wishes to all the applicants.

Concerning the HS diploma: Ask your counselor if you can take the missed classes through the state academic provider during summer.

Several applicants had the same concern in 2009. Below are some posting concerning this subject:

From the 2009 Thread:
Nester: “Some RHP students receive diplomas from their high schools after they finish their freshman year at USC. The USC year kind of counts double, both as the freshman year of college and the senior year of high school.”

MDCISSP: “You need to check with your high school guidance counselor regarding a high school diploma, having enough credits, etc. if you decide on attending the RHP program. Every state is different regarding high school diploma requirements.

JBUS: “For anyone whose high school won’t let you graduate alongside RHP, but still want a high school diploma (equivalent), there is always the CHSPE in california: California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)

Dopaminescene: “for those of you who can’t graduate but live out of california, there’s always the GED.”

Purpleduck84: “note of warning… you’re supposed to get your high school diploma after your RHP year. Well, just be sure to be on top of that. I almost didn’t graduate because of a snafu/miscommunication. When I went back to my high school after RHP was over, just to confirm that I could graduate, the HS administration told me that there was a problem. My high school required a full year of econ/government (one semester for econ, one semester for government), but I had only taken a semester’s worth at USC. No matter that my high school had previously agreed to let me graduate (and they had signed that stinkin graduation “contract”); now they were refusing. Fortunately, I had had the foresight to take a government class the previous summer at the local community college. I asked my high school if they would accept that and they agreed. So I lucked out.

I was luckier than my roommate, who did not graduate at all. She came from a bad public high school and I guess they were disgruntled that one of their few academic superstars was leaving for greener pastures.

Not graduating from high school doesn’t mean much if you graduate from college. After all, if you have a diploma from USC, no one’s gonna care that you didn’t finish high school. But that’s IF you finish college. USC costs a lot. People drop out. My roommate managed to finish (good thing she had a full academic scholarship!). So just be careful.”
