RHS (Resident Honors Program) 2009

aww PSAT’s…

i got a 213, and if i didn’t accidentally skip a writing question, i would’ve got a 216.

BUT, last year’s cutoff in California was a 217 =(

Ahhhhh, has no one gotten a response yet? This is kind of nerve-wracking, since it’s almost mid-February.

Do you think I might have had a chance if I had applied?

Also, I’m first generation (Vietnamese/ father was POW 9 years) <–Does this help?
Thanks! MANNN I REGRET NOT APPLYINGGGGG!!!

I wouldn’t know whether or not you would have had a chance because, as rosinyangster says, no admissions letters have come yet.
It doesn’t really matter anyway if you didn’t apply, does it? It’s not like you can apply next year.
(I also don’t know what Kumon is, and there’s only a sentence-or-two description of it on AOPS. It couldn’t hurt to have it, though.)

“Ahhhhh, has no one gotten a response yet? This is kind of nerve-wracking, since it’s almost mid-February.”
I expect that letters will come in this or next week, but that’s just what I’d consider sensible.

By the way, if you (whoever is reading this…) get a letter, please post about it here. You don’t have to say what the decision is; it would just be nice to know about the letters coming out.

Will do…although I’m guessing if you don’t want to say, you didn’t get in =P

Narusakuu, I worked at Kumon too! But I didn’t go to it as a student. How did you like working there?

I called the office and they said admissions should go out this week, and to call them if i dont receive anything. Resume bag blowing/nail biting anyone?

gasp Does that mean they’re MAILING them this week, or they’ve already been mailed and we should receive them by this week…?
Because apparently it takes a looong time for mail to reach Texas from California, as evident from how long it took my application to reach them.
I am going to call on Friday, as soon as I find my mailbox empty…Although it’s going to hurt getting rejected over the phone.

thanks for calling in chuckles!

I’ve been getting lazier and lazier the past two weeks, and haven’t done ANY homework at all!!

So if i don’t get in… that means spending the rest of the semester in attempts to pull up my D- in Calculus LOL
( and also finishing my junior research paper in less than a week =[ )

Charles, that was brilliant. I’m really a fool not to have thought of that.

I pilfered your genius and just called to confirm that some supplemental notes I sent actually got there, and from what the nice gal I talked to said, I’m certain they have not sent out actual letters yet. Or, at least, not the majority of actual letters. I asked if an update that I just sent today would be reviewed by the committee, and she indicated that it would be. So . . . good news for me, I suppose, though I’m still quite nervous.

Crazii? That’s shocking. I don’t honestly think a D- in Calculus is an ‘LOL’ matter. Not that I’m scolding you or anything.

I just got a call from RHP telling me that they can’t give me my admissions decision/letter until the actual USC admissions office does something with it, which they said won’t be until March.
I didn’t call them or do anything to bring the call about, so I don’t really know what to draw from it: I think they were more or less telling me that I’m likely accepted, since they told me that my application looks great and to start looking for 2009 financial aid. Then again, they might just say that to everyone they call, regardless of their decision.

I have an 11 year old in my Calculus class. My grade is a 296/300, his is a 294/300.
Pathetic.

oh poirots, it’s only been one test, and i’m pretty good at math, so it’s funny =P

I actually got a 85 on the first chapter test, but because i didn’t do any homework, it got lowered significantly

so topher93 and poirotsfriend, the letters aren’t coming this week? =[

I think it means they mailed them out this week. I live in socal so i should get a letter early…the different RHP people seem to all be saying different things though. O well, I’ll give you guys a heads up wihen I get mine. Odd, I applied not thinking I’d want to go but now with the decisions so close, I’m really hoping I get in. I hope it’s not just ego.

Anyone else just started really looking into colleges for the year after? I’m pretty stoked on Columbia right now.

O and a lot of my senior friends have gotten acceptances from USC already. What up with that?

I don’t know how it’ll work for you (I’m out of state, that might change things for me) but I won’t get a letter until March.
If you didn’t get a call, maybe it’s different for you. Feel free to draw conclusions, though.

By the way, and wholly off subject, what did you (whoever’s reading…) write your essay about?

Christopher: We already talked about essays, see page 10. Your situation, Christopher, is quite interesting . . . I do hope that those who don’t receive calls aren’t denied automatically. Congrats on (what seems to be) acceptance!

And an 11-year-old in your CALCULUS class?! Prodigy!!

Charles: Well, seniors are not applying to something as selective as the RHP. Plus, I’m sure the committee for the RHP is a lot smaller than that for general admissions.

As to other colleges, I’ve been looking around since 8th grade really. I’m actually really strongly considering USC. That, or UCLA. I’m not leaving CA, and I’m not so much a fool that I aim for Stanford.

l’ami de poirot: I just wanted to make one clarification, although you might already know this. Although RHP is really selective in the grand scheme of things, they do accept about 25% (a RHP person told me it was roughly the same % as regular USC admission). I know that we’re a “self-selected” applicant pool and all, but nevertheless it’s “easier” to get into than, say, the Ivys.

I have thus far been a considerable lurker, a shadow in the corner of college confidential. Please understand that my goal in writing this post is NOT to cause a frantic frenzy of any sort. However, to those who are interested, I sent in my application to the Resident Honors Program before the scholarship deadline (well, perhaps right on the day)…regardless, I received an acceptance letter towards the end of January. That being said, I was not expecting a letter; my stats were towards the bottom of the range for a series of reasons. My essays, recs, and others were probably better. I have spent too much of my life being defined by dreary numbers, so I am choosing not to post my specific GPAs, grades, etc. I am on the East Coast, so, it is really hard to predict when you folks might receive your letter. Best of luck to all- may peace and love surround your soul during this New Year.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Although I am now frantically frenzied.
And even more confused about my call.
Did you receive an invitation for the Presidential Scholarship (or whichever one it is that requires an interview) with your letter?

Try not to worry. In this weird and wacky admissions process, I have come to the decision that karma and fate will take care of us; I apologize for the corny-clich
