Rice University Class of 2023 RD Thread

Does anyone know how many got waitlisted

My son was waitlisted. Applied ED and was deferred, now waitlisted RD. I am doubting he will accept. Just for others who wonder:

Degree of choice- Mechanical Engineering
ACT- 33
Class rank- 10/350
GPA- 4.45 Weighted
3 varsity sports for the last 3 years, trips to state in track, districts in FB and basketball
All APs and/or Dual credit that is available
Recommendations- decent
Went to an interview and felt it went well
Essays were really good in my opinion
Hook- maybe that he is a military brat

Looks like he will be headed to TAMU in the fall and I think we are pretty happy with that decision! Good luck Owls. The campus sure is beautiful.

.

Hey guys- quick question about Owl Days.

Does Rice sponsor plane tickets and whatnot? Or will I need to pay out of pocket?

EDIT: Nevermind. Just did some research… I don’t think so. My bad guys!

In any case – GO RICE OWLS!!!

I believe you have to pay your own way to Owl Days. Rice will put the students in a dorm room with some Rice students if the student wishes to stay there. if parents come, they have to book and stay in a hotel. https://admission.rice.edu/sites/g/files/bxs676/f/ScheduleAtAGlance_OwlDays2019_4.pdf

@Highway61 41% for the total yield (ED+RD). 2022 was 41.2%
There were more ED acceptances this year so the RD yield should be around 28.2% for a total yield of 40.2%. Of course, this all assumes that the class size will actually be 950.

41% yield does not make any sense. This year Rice had a 10% increase in ED admits (408 in 2019 vs 371 in 2018).

RD yield of 2018 should be compared to RD yield of 2019.

In 2018, 598 (out of 1957) students decided to enroll. That is a 30.6% yield.

This year, Rice admitted 1956 (2364 overall - 408 ED) students in RD.

30.6% yield (of 1956) ~ 598 students.

If even 27 more students accept this year (due to more $$ offered as part of the Rice Investment), the total no. becomes 625 (598 +27).

With 400 students enrolled in ED (2% melt out of 408 admits), the total enrolled students increase to 1025 (625 + 400).

Either Rice is anticipating a decrease in the RD yield or the ED melt is much higher than 2%.

Else their calculation is way off.

What do you say @Faulkner1897 ?

accepted with 15 APs 34ACT

Denied

Architecture school
35 ACT
4.0 GPA
Solid ECs and good essays or so I thought
Lots of demonstrated interest

Last fall when I visited, the architecture school rep told me that architecture admission was significantly more selective than the overall RD pool, and they place a lot of weight on the required portfolio (which is not my strontsuit). Less holistic.

I was expecting a rejection after getting WL at WashU a couple weeks ago but this still hurt a lot.

Can anyone find any specific stats on architecture admission or confirm/deny whether it really is that much more competitive? Because if the overall rate dropped to 8% and architecture is lower rate? That’s scary.

Rejected here. Definitely disappointed. But it was gonna be a stretch financially anyway. She still has apps in a few other places but those will surely all be “no”s or waitlists as well.

Looks like UT Honors for the win!

Well, if they are expecting 41% overall yield, wouldn’t that be 41% of 2364 total admits, which would be 969? That would work just fine for the class. The official number for class of 2022 is 960 students, although Rice reported 966 at drop off in August.

Son is accepted with perfect SAT scores, Straight A’s, lots of EC and leaderships, and several national academic awards

Accepted! Was definitely expecting a flat out rejection since I’m a Houstonian and it’s rumored to be especially hard for us. 1560 SAT and an IB student for academics. Congrats to everyone else!

D19 accepted. Received a fee waiver at the last minute and applied. OOS NJ. This whole process had been an anxiety driven experience. So grateful for this opportunity. Good luck to all.

@Faulkner1897 In that case, RD yield this year should drop. As the ED enrollment was higher.

Accepted! I was at work when I found out so just now posting. My stats can be found on other posts but I’ll put them here later. I have sibling legacy as well.

I just hope they don’t over-enroll this year. I guessed that accepted students in RD would go down significantly compared to last year (both because of more students accepted in ED, and the Rice Investment possibly increasing yield), and that didn’t happen.

Even a 5% increase in yield due to the Rice Investment means 100 more students. Cue 2017 over enrollment scenario.

DS rejected. SAT: 1530 (780 math, 750 read), 3.9 unweighted GPA (GPAs are highly school-dependent.), Lots of physics research, including published papers, placed high in competitive robotics, runs a maker club at local middle school, does fencing and ultimate. Accepted at UIUC, USC, Georgia Tech, UCSD for computer science, and still waiting on several other schools.

@Meadow530 I got rejected from all 3 UT honor programs I applied to, but was accepted into Rice. It really seems like a random process to me. Don’t count your son/daughter out yet!
