Rice University Class of 2023 RD Thread

Rice gives AP credits for scores of 4 and 5 on most of the AP exams, so many freshmen come in with lots of credits. This makes it easier to double major.

I don’t think Rice reserves a huge part of its class for legacy admits like some other schools such as Harvard do. However, if there are two equally qualified students, and Rice has to pick one, being a legacy can’t hurt. I don’t think Rice publishes what percentage of its incoming class are legacies, but someone like @Faulkner1897 may have better info on this subject.

I have never seen or heard any legacy percentage data. In my daughter’s residential college, there are 4 freshmen legacy students (that she knows of) out of about 88 freshmen in her college.

My kid’s classmate went to Rice but he also had acceptances for Princeton and Williams so obviously he wasn’t accepted at Rice for his legacy status. It’s other way around, he picked Rice because it’s a family legacy.

Are a lot of kids from the south that go to Rice? I’m from the west coast so I’m worried.

Thanks for the update on legacy stuff y’all! @Roblu37 I am no where near as knowledgeable as others on this thread, but I wouldn’t worry about that as much. I’ve heard of some places liking kids coming from places where they have less applications though, so that may work out in your favor.

@Meadow530 did they send a heads up email for the ED release?

Is 3/22 still a likely release date? Also, what time do they usually release

They sent a heads up email for ED release on December 11th, IIRC.

I emailed Admissons today. Exact quote:

“Good afternoon! As of now we are still in the final stages of shaping the class. The decision release will be late March or early April. The students will be receiving an email soon notifying them of the date and time of their decision release.”

Sounds like it could be even later than Ivy day.

Sounds like Amazon delivery date! Estimated delivery by next week than arrives in two days.

Good luck everyone.

A couple of years ago, even on the day of release, they said the same thing when people called. So don’t rule out Friday!

fingers crossed for Friday. i really cant stand feeling this queasy with anxiety

“early April”, NOOOOOO!

Interesting! I didn’t know that. This whole process just takes too dang long. Ready to be done

@Roblu37 The experience of my daughter has been that there are plenty of West Coast kids at Rice. In fact, there are multiple current Rice students from our mid-sized SoCal town. I wouldn’t worry that you are at a geographical disadvantage. Good luck!

Hang in there. The decisions will be out soon. In 2017, the decisions came out with no warning on the Friday many predicted based on past patterns. I hope you get a heads up this year. Please post here as soon as the decisions go live.

@Roblu37 Some say it is harder to get into Rice from Texas, especially from Houston, than from other states. That may be because Rice gets so many applications from Houston and Texas. As Rice’s nationwide reputation grows, Rice is getting more applications from other parts of the country than in the past. The new financial aid initiative only added fuel to the fire.

I hope many of you will be Rice Owls soon.

Actually being an OSS or international you may have a slight advantage for bringing diversity to the community. Adcoms are likely familiar with local schools and know their strengths so Houstonians may have a different kind of advantage. Academically competent athletes and URMs are in demand everywhere so they certainly have an advantage. Due to Rice’s nerdy reputation probably a lot of self selection happens like it does at MIT, CIT etc compared to Ivies, USC and NYU type schools where everyone applies to try their luck.

I’ve replied, but I don’t see my reply. We have saved for college and our home is paid off. We went through the calculation hoping for 1/2 price, but the result was $0 and it said we can pay $95k/year, so “no need”. We qualify for $0 everywhere. Kid’s in at his backup, his backup backup and his 3 x backup.

Of course, the kid would still prefer Rice and our cheapness will have no effect on his decision. We would have to mortgage the home though. He is not the only kid.

@aparent2019, ah so the home equity probably killed you at the CSS schools, especially the ones who don’t cap it. Plus non retirement savings, too… high net worth overall. Tricky spot to be in for schools that are $$$ and offer little to no merit aid.
