My daughter’s major is Bioengineering (Biomedical Engineering at some schools). In our case we felt as long as a school was ranked well we would assume it was highly respected with employers and grad schools so we didn’t worry too much about one being slightly better than others, especially since the rankings change from year to year. We focused more on where she thought the fit was better and where she thought she’d have the best opportunities that she would take advantage of. Her final choice came down between Rice and Michigan. Michigan was ranked a little higher and she would have been able to continue in her sport there, but she felt she fit in better at Rice. I think she would have been fine at either school but the size of Rice fits her personality.
Is this the weekend you are going to Rice or next?
I don’t think you can compare college admissions now to college admissions 10 years ago. I saw a discussion some among Rice alums who interview prospective students and they all commented they don’t think they would get admitted now if they applied. They said almost everyone they interviewed was amazing and they were shocked by some that were denied.
Things have just changed a lot and it’s a lot more competitive now. For the fall of 2011 they received 13,000 applicants. This year they received over 29,000. If you look back in this thread at some who were waitlisted or denied you will see many with amazing stats and activities.
This, IMO, is the best approach. It is hard to convince parents and students that rankings are one source of information. Our society is so brainwashed into Top 10 whatever…I blame Casey Kasem.
Well I am not going by T10, I have acceptance from Case Western too. I am looking at research opportunities and ability to get into Med school in Texas through my UG.
That’s sort of like deciding whether to see billy joel in concert or elton john…you can’t go wrong…although Duke probably has a bit more national recognition due to hoops.
Congratulations! Welcome to Rice! I have a friend whose daughter is on the Rice dance team. I can put you in touch with her if you PM me. http://danceteam.rice.edu
Congratulations! My DD is loving it there right now despite COVID restrictions. Yours will too. And things will be even better in a few weeks. Start thinking O-Week.
Thanks! My daughter fell in love at Rice after her 8th grade summer visit and her dream finally comes to true!
I wonder whether Rice will require all students get vaccinitated. The admission office said they are not sure. Does anyone know about the vaccine situation at Rice?
Rice is currently taking a survey of all students, faculty, staff etc. and has not yet announced any vaccine requirement. Rice has been offering vaccines on campus to students. faculty, and staff. Many students including my daughter have been fully vaccinated.
