Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

OMG!!! Dana gets a medal!!! Try to give birth and then drop all that weight and return to compete at such a high level - oh, while taking care of a baby/toddler! Congrats, Dana.

Many women, particularly in endurance sports, have done better after having kids.

This is a 100 fly. Very technical, very tough event. Definitely a sprint which requires extreme body coordination. Winning a bronze medal in this event only 17 months after giving birth is quite a feat.

I was only watching a bit in and out, but did the Chinese gymnastics team just fall apart?

@SaintSaens I said something very similar to Mr. R. I found myself saying “oh she just did the splits in the air” as though that is something more than 0.5% of the population can do!

Another huge wow. A WR in men’s 100 breast is now just a notch above 57. The slowest stroke became quite speedy!

Katie
 a major wow. 3:56.

I never expected watching the cycling road races to be so exciting! So glad the Netherlands woman rider who catapulted over her handlebars to slam into the curb is going to be okay!

This guy is annoying

The 4 X 100 men’s relay was great. Phelps was instrumental in giving them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, and he seemed truly joyful after the race.

“Where’s Johnny Weir? I know he’s a skating commentator but I love him. He’s refreshing and fun. They should have him do some stuff.”

He’s there. He and Tara Lipinski were introduced as part of the NBC broadcast team in Rio, but I haven’t seen any of their reporting. Based on the brief introduction I gathered that he/they will be doing features on Brazilian style and fashion rather than sports reporting or commentary.

Must be something in the name Dana-thinking of swimmer Dana Torres in 2008, at age 40, medalling 2 years after having a baby!

That was Dara Torres, not Dana.

Does childbirth improve athletic ablity?

^Sure, I do not disagree. But that article talks about distance runners, not sprint swimmers.

What did gymnastics fans think about having former gymnast Nastia Liukin (Gold medalist in 2008) as the analyst for women’s gymnastics? I think it was a good move–clearly she knows the sport. I just wish she would say more. Tim Tagget was fine and seemed to defer to Nastia.

To add to the Dana Volmer story, she was on bed rest for a month or so. And gained 50 pounds.

I think Nastia needs to improve. She needs to talk a lot more. When the men are competing, you almost forget she’s there. What I don’t know is whether she is being naturally passive, or whether the guys won’t let her get a work in edgewise.

I was watching women’s gymnastics yesterday afternoon on the livestream and those commentators were just horrible. I heard that Taneth B. (the ice dancer) was one of them. The other female was so weak
she kept giggling and making inane comments
then they identified her as Courtney Kupets, who I just loved when she was competing. Young women, please! Use your big girl voice. Be authoritative. Don’t giggle while on the air.

A good explanation of the round bruise marks sported by some athletes and the cupping technique:

Looks like Phelps secured a decent lane in the 200 fly semi finals by swimming (apparently) conservatively in the prelims.

I actually found a study indicating that cupping + conventional therapy is more effect for RA patients than just conventional therapy. I’m always surprised when I find peer-reviewed articles of “alternative” therapies.

There are sets for ~$20 on amazon. I’m going to try it

Romani, be careful with the ones that need to be “flamed.” If you overheat the glass, the rims can cause burns. Do not do a whole bunch at a time, try a few. Also, I was told that when the application ends with these large “hickeys,” it means it was done somewhat incorrectly - too much vaccum/too long. Apparently, this therapy is still used in China and had been in use in Eastern Europe. Oh, and almost forgot - clear it with your doctor first!

So, apparently there has been some TV coverage which celebrates women who have won events by referencing their spouses as having been instrumental in the wins. 8-| To counteract this, I saw a hilarious tweet which said, “The fiancĂ© of Miss California USA 2010 won his 19th gold medal in swimming.” LOL

I didn’t see Courtney Kupets–watched NBC. I wonder if any of the outlets with commentators actually audition them or if simply figure that getting a former Olympian in the sport is all they need to do.
