RIP, David Bowie

David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69. (I didn’t even realize he was sick.)

OMG! That’s terrible and completely unexpected news. So sad. Thanks for posting. I’m a huge fan, and he will be greatly missed.

Oh, no! :frowning: He will be missed.

OMG. I am crushed! He has always been one of my favorite artists. :frowning:

David Bowie was kind of a fixture of my childhood. My parents are 5 years but a musical generation apart (mom liked the Beatles and Elton John, dad was more into the likes of KISS and Aerosmith). Yet, they both really liked him and I had many of his albums memorized from them playing so often.

His is a talent that will truly be missed.

He definitely transcends generations. My 20-year-old daughter just called me and was choked up with the news. Partly it was because his music was a shared passion between us.

Waaaaa.
Legendary.

His music features prominently on the soundtrack to my life. And I had just downloaded his latest album that was released on Friday (his birthday). Some of the songs are so poignant now - realising what he was going through while writing them. So sad…

So sad to hear of David Bowie’s passing. We have lost a music legend.

R.I.P. Such a creative guy.

RIP :frowning:

How sad! A musical legend.

Can the mods combine the two threads???

Devastated. RIP David. Let all the children boogie.

I saw the David Bowie exhibit at the Mus of Contemporary Art last year. Such a pioneer.

So sad. H and I are big fans and H saw him several times when he was living and working in the UK.

Very sad, like others I didn’t realize he was sick, I knew he had a new album coming out so it was kind of surprising to find out he had been fighting cancer. Doesn’t surprise me, once he got married and settled down, he seemed to have decided to become a private person, you didn’t hear all that much about himself, other than once jokingly when he referred to himself as “Mr. Iman”

For a kid growing up, he represented something different, someone not afraid to be himself, whatever he was doing, and musically he wasn’t afraid to reinvent himself, either. If I had to pick out one song of his, it probably would be “Space Oddity”, on a number of planes (I know some believe it was a lampoon of the space program, but I kind of saw it as being the human side of it,when space flight was kind of becoming routine in people’s minds, about how scary and lonely it must be…what do you want, I am a space Geek). He definitely left a legacy, and if he wanted to be cheesy he could have easily recorded the song “My Way”, it would be true:)

Saturday I downloaded his new album and listened to it and thought to myself that it felt “melancholy” - listening to it actually made me feel sad. I simply couldn’t put my finger on what it was and why. When I heard the news last night and learned he’d been ill for 18 months it was like a light bulb - I first saw David Bowie live in 1972 when I was 13 and have seen him live again several times, possibly the last time was 2004. His music plays in my house all the time, and when my D was in London she went to the exhibit David Bowie Is…and brought me home a book bag, and actually got the official book as my Hanukkah present this year. RIP David Bowie.

Wow… talk about someone who was musical genius and could transform himself over multi generations… this was David Bowie. So sad. May his family be at peace with the outpouring of love that I’m seeing.
