I never missed a Star Trek episode when the show was first on from 1966-1969. I occasionally catch an episode today, but to get through it, I need to rely on my huge affection for the franchise as well as the idea that humanity will still be around in the 23rd century. The writing has aged fairly well, but the production values obviously have not. Many of the performances seem cringe-worthy to me today (looking at you, William Shatner). But NOT Leonard Nimoy’s! His work truly stands up and is as compelling today as it was almost 50 years ago. That’s a rare accomplishment. If not for the Spock character, I don’t know that we’d still be enjoying Star Trek so many versions later.
Nimoy provided the Spock voice for another BBT episode - “The Transporter Malfunction,” in which Sheldon tries to substitute his damaged Spock action figure for Leonard’s undamaged one. I don’t know whether BBT is still in production for this season but if it is, I’m sure the writers will pay tribute in some way.
