RIP Mary Tyler Moore

My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

Among other great things she did, she also was the first to introduce us all to Michael Keaton, Swoozie Kurtz and David Letterman

Just don’t read the comments.

I grew up watching TDVD show in reruns, and then MTM show from its premiere on. Will miss her.

@lololu, that video from her short-lived (with good reason) variety show is hilarious. Has there ever been a more uncomfortable looking performer than David Letterman in that skit?

That is hilarious with David Letterman!

A 1 hour special about Mary is just starting on CBS.

I wonder if MTM’s funeral will be anything like this:

RIP Mary.

We have no specials on MTM?

If you missed the CBS special, don’t be too upset. I was a little disappointed. But, I’m not a huge Gayle King fan and I thought it focused on Oprah way too much.

I turned the CBS special off. It was just an Oprah reminiscence of MTM. They have hours of shows, why didn’t they give us some more clips?

Instead I played the pilot episode for my D.

@Bestfriendsgirl I read a long time ago that it was Moore herself who lobbied to wear pants on DVD. She understood better than the old-guy producers what young women were wearing. The compromise was that she could wear pants for one scene each episode.

I think all of us of a certain generation feel like we’ve lost a friend.

PBS will be re-airing a 2015 documentary, which I gather isn’t so Oprah-centric. Check local listings.

Here’s a nice article about MTM capris–no paywall. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C2373rRWEAAytOm.jpg

I remember the episode of MTM when she goes on a date, then comes home the next morning in her going out on a date dress. I was still a young girl, but I do remember being shocked. Even at that age, I understood the implication. Apparently, a lot of people were upset about it.

I remember the scene when Mary’s parents were visiting. Her mom was going out and said, as she was leaving, “Don’t forget to take your pill.” Mary and her dad said, in unison, “I won’t.”

It got a great laugh. Very grown-up way to make the point that Mary didn’t necessarily sleep alone. There was a backlash, though people apparently got over it.

Yes, the CBS special on MTM was largely a tribute to Oprah. I expected Oprah to talk about her weight loss empire.

@doschicos - doesn’t everything focus on Oprah way too much!

Especially Oprah.

I loved Mary and Rhoda’s cute clothes and great apartments - they made adulating look like so much fun. And although MTM was hailed as “sophisticated, adult comedy” I never felt the show talked down to me as a kid.
