I was in a job interview this morning and the guy mentioned Prince – but I don’t know if he had heard this or not, his comment seemed to be more about things in the Twin Cities. I didn’t hear about it until just now (wonder if he knew and expected a different reaction from me? Oh, well… but it would be a dumb way to blow an interview!). My Facebook feed has blown up with comments from MN friends. Guys in my freshman dorm used to rock the whole building with Party Like It’s 1999 – still love that song.
All this week, a local radio station was playing the heck out of Prince’s music, back to back to back. Wonder if someone at the radio station felt something. I sure enjoyed every minute of it.
NPR did a great tribute to Prince here this afternoon…so sad.
People knew he had been sick - his plane made a detour (Moline, IL) landing last weekend on its way back to Minneapolis so he could go to a hospital. It was in the news around here (at least midwest area). When someone has a plane detoured when they’re less than an hour from their home airport, you gotta know they were pretty sick. However, he went on to perform another concert the following night.
Just saw a headline that said:
“How do we mourn Prince without Prince on the Internet?” …
As my D would say: SAME!!
I found this from the American Idol finale:

Someone from MNDOT (MN Dept. of Transportation) reporting the I-35 bridge will be purple tonight.
I believe this is the same bridge that collapsed several years ago.
Saw him on the Purple Rain tour in 1985. Incredible, true talent. RIP
Prince is on my life’s soundtrack multiple times. I will miss him.
What a crappy year for music.
Let’s keep Elton John, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart going, ok folks?
@toledo, yes, it is the same bridge.
And James Taylor Please and Don Henley.
Yes, Pizzagirl! Add Ringo, too. Whaaaa?! Ringo is 75?!!! My god.
Add Paul Simon, too, please.
And Bob Dylan (hopefully seeing him in June - tix open up at 5 am on Tuesday for the concert in my area).
And yes, Ringo is/was the oldest Beatle, followed by John, Paul and George in that order. Also the poorest growing up. Friend me on FB and you can see where he grew up in Liverpool
And Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Please. And Linda Ronstadt.
Loved “Little Red Corvette” and “Purple Rain.” And his Super Bowl performance was amazing.
I’m sadder than I would have thought I’d be.
This is so very sad. I did see Prince a few times at First Avenue in Minneapolis. So amazing. He was often called the Patron Saint of First Avenue. I am quite certain that ‘Purple Rain’ was filmed there. Just this past Saturday, April 16, he invited people to Paisley Park for a dance party. Just after midnight, Prince appeared for about five minutes to show off his new purple piano. He even played briefly. I am very sad today. The world just lost one of the great ones.
Let’s Go Crazy
Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life
Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The after world
A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night…
So sad about Prince. Crying on and off since this afternoon. I grew up in Minnesota and remember going to First Avenue over the summers in college and hoping to see him. What a talent. At a certain point I listened constantly to Controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain. My grief is largely because his music was the soundtrack of my youth when life was fun and anything was possible.
I didn’t feel any particular grief over David Bowie or John Lennon. This is the first musician death that has really got me.
I will go into mourning when Elton or Paul pass on. I feel fortunate I’ve gotten to see both of them several times.
I liked Prince a lot, saw him in the Purple Rain tour of 1984 and he too was the soundtrack to a lot of fond memories. I think because he was so reclusive, he may not have had as much as impact on music as Bowie did.
