DH and I have about 10 days vacation after we drop off DS at CMU. Any suggestions for places of interest to drive to from Pittsburgh? We are thinking about Cleveland to see Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but not sure where to after that. (Recommendations for hotels/restaurants in Cleveland also appreciated.) We need to end up back in home state of NY. Thanks!

Pittsburgh itself could keep you busy for a few days with the Warhol museum, Pirates, incline, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water is south of Pittsburgh in a beautiful part of the state. In Cleveland, besides the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the area around Case University - University Circle includes the Natural History Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Botanical Garden and the Cleveland Symphony. Just an hour south on I-71 is Amish country as well. Enjoy your trip.

Fallingwater has already been mentioned. Kentuck Knob is also in that area and is very interesting. The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio is interesting as is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (as you already know) . Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio is cool if you are into amusement parks. The Amish country in Ohio (as murmur mentioned) is interesting. I have stayed at the Inn at Amish Door years ago but not sure if it is still around. As noted, Pittsburgh itself has tons of stuff- museums, Kennywood, inclines, etc. Have fun! Husband graduated from CMU years ago (as had his dad when it was Carnegie Tech). Great school - congratulations to your son and have fun on your vacation!

Cleveland is awfully far in the opposite direction, isn’t it? You could try The National Aviary in PGH or visit the submarine at the Science museum, the Heinz Center…could go to Buffalo/Niagara, or the tall ships in Erie. What sorts of places have you visited and liked?

Oh drive back through NY state and go to the Lucille Ball Museum!

I think it’s about 2 hours from Pittsburgh to Cleveland. We’ve been to and enjoyed many cities e.g., Boston, Philadelphia, DC, Orlando, Miami, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle, Vancouver. Mostly on the coasts as you can see and prefer sightseeing to relaxing. We did spend several days in Pittsburgh last year when DS attended summer program. Great city. Thanks to all for the suggestions. Have also considered just heading home and having staycation since we are in NY metro area but…empty nest. Ugh. Would like to put that off for a few days.

Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh- not what you think - very cool modern art

Fallingwater is a must see IMO and I agree there’s a lot of nice stuff in Pittsburgh itself. Are you driving from Pittsburgh in some direction, or just looking for general stuff in the area? Lots of suggestions here: [Things to do in Laurel Highlands, Pa | What to do when visiting Western Pennsylvania | Visitors Bureau](Things to Do in the Laurel Highlands | Attractions & Activities)

When we dropped our son off at CMU several years ago, we headed down to Washington DC then to Annapolis, Baltimore, and Atlantic City. We were (a) checking out areas for potential relocation and (b) heading towards New Haven to visit DH’s parents. I didn’t see all of those cities on your list so maybe they would be good for sightseeing? And on the coast for the most part! On the way home, you could detour through the Delaware Water Gap.

Oh no, don’t just drive home! You’re already out!! Cleveland has lots of interest; I just wouldn’t go west myself since that adds to the drive. But ymmv. The Cleveland Museum of Art is very nice!

Yes, it’s only 2 hours or so from Pittsburgh to Cleveland, but then you’re in . . . Cleveland. If I found myself in Pittsburgh with 10 days of vacation on my hands, I’d be more inclined to head north into the Niagara region of Ontario, then Toronto, then perhaps even Montreal before heading south to NY. Much more of interest in that direction, IMO: livelier, more interesting cities, and in Montreal especially almost a European feel.

Niagara Falls is definitely worth visiting if you haven’t been there. After I graduated from CMU I got super lucky on rates, and was able to get a falls-facing room in one of those towers on the Canadian side. Definitely the best $80 (Canadian!) I’ve ever spent on a hotel room. I think we were 28 stories up.

Niagara Falls can be a lot of fun. There is a great little town a few miles away from Niagara call Niagara on the Lake. It is very charming with great restaurants and Inns - there a few wineries in the area as well.

You could head in a different direction and head toward Gettysburg and tour that area then head up to Lancaster & Hershey on the way back to New York.
